Birth*9 April 1884 Chilleon Mabee was born on 9 April 1884 at New Jersey.3
(Witness) Educationcirca 1896 He witnessed the education of James Lorenzo Mabee circa 1896 at Williamsville School, Vernon Township, New Jersey; From New Jersey Herald 4/14/70. Article submitted by WJM #195, shows picture of school. (Original owned by Alfred Houghtaling.) Column called "Out Of The Past". Early in the nineteenth century this was one of 15 one room schools (?) in Vernon township, where only recently the five (unreadable) schools were discarded in favor of one 14-room school. This was the Williamsville School, situated on Vernon Road about half-way between Vernon and Stockholm. The teacher in the picture has been identified as (blank) Farber, and old school records give her tenure of (blank) as 1895 to 1897, which would indicate that this picture was taken some time during those years. When this school was built is not known, but the last student listed was a Min__Vail in 1909. In the old days, ______school had its own school board, and the names on this list were families still prominent in the area, such as ______, Williams, Storms, Strait and mabee. This particular district was bounded on the east by Canistear, the south by Hardyston Township, the west by McAfee, and the north by Vernon. Identification of the students has been made by Mrs. Maud S. F. Utter, now of Citrus Heights, Calif., who sent the picture to the Herald for publication, and asked that it later be turned over to the Sussex County Historical Society. In the front row, left to right, are two Cahill sisters, Maud Storms, Ethel Graner, Hattie Riggs, E. Birdsell, Minnie Riggs, Frank Flood, Jesse Riggs. Back Row: left to right: Etta Birdsell, Jennie Garlinghouse, William Storms, Goldie Graner, Lucy Rysdeck, Eva Tice, Bessie Mabie, Bertha Kelsey, Betty Jennings, Alfred Riggs, Stella Birdsall, Silas Storms, (with the teacher standing behind him), Bertha Webb, Kate Garllinghouse, C. Mabee, Blanche Mabee, and Maud Flood (Mrs. Utter.)

Additonal comments on Williams family and Wiliamsville from Jennie Sweetman.
Comments from the late Charles Conway: April 29, 1970. Morris Stickle also taught at Williamsville. May have been the last to teach there. School house was still standing there in 1924. Someone bought the schoolhouse, tore it down and took it to Vernon in back of Schaeffers on Route 94, Vernon. Mabee place was on Route 515, past Henry Bell's house."4

(Witness) oObit4 October 1956 Katherine Mary Mabee was mentioned in the obituary of Blanche Mabee on 4 October 1956 at Warwick, Orange County, New York; Mrs Blanche M Barrett, widow of Ferris E Barrett died at the home on Ferguson Road (sic- Barrett Road) last Friday (Sept 28) afternoon. Funeral Services were held at the Strong Funeral Home at 2:30on Sunday Afternoon, conducted by Rev Stanley R Jones. Internment was in Warwick Cemetery. Mrs Barrett was a daughter of the Late James Mabee and Ella A Williams and was born in Vernon Township on February 16, 1888. Blanche would churn the butter by hand in the cellar where it was cooler. She then took it upstairs into the kitchen and used a paddle to shape it into blocks. One of the first purchases after gaining electricity in 1948 was a butter churner. She would sell the butter to the neighbors. She also would sell eggs, vegetables grown in the garden across the road. The gladiolas she would sell only to her best customers. She also made home made ice cream from the rich milk the cows gave. Some of the flavors remembered were: Vanilla, Peach and the fourth of July speciality: Tutti-frutti. Phyllis B. Van Dien Hammond remembers, her Grandmother used to take the feedbags cloth which was usually a very colorful muslin fabric and make quilts and aprons from them. Rheba Van Dien McKernan and Vickie Stephens Van Dien have two of these quilts made from this material.9

Ferris Egbert Barrett

M, #17352, b. 21 April 1861, d. 13 December 1945
FatherJames Edward Barrett1 b. 30 May 1840, d. 13 Dec 1913
MotherRachel Cooper1 b. 16 Jan 1840, d. 15 Feb 1917
Note*  From email from James Van Dien: The story that I remember is that James Edward and Ferris, our grandfather ( Ferris's namesake and your great-grandfather, Fred) had a falling out and split the operation of the farm for a period of time. This accounts for the fact that there are two barns, the upper and lower barn, and the building of a second house across from the old main farmhouse. This house was later called the tenant house and was rented in the summer by the Dells family and their assorted NY relations and friends for many years. It is the house where I believe the present caretaker/farmer now lives, but it definitely is on and a part of the High Breeze Farm property. Obit in Warwick Advertiser: Ferris E. Barrett, a farmer, died Friday at his home near New Milford. He was born in Vernon Township April 21,1861, a son of James E Barrett and Rachel Cooper. Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife, the former Blanche Mabee; four children, Theo, wife of Herman Day of Bloomingdale, NJ; Leona, wife of Millard Van Dien of Port Jervis, NY, Frances, wife of Wilfred Washer of Ogdensburg, NY and Luther, at home; a sister Mrs. Effie Buchanan of Allendale, NJ and a brother, Seeley of New Milford. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Strong Funeral Home, Rev. Seely Quackenbush officiating. Burial in Warwick Cemetery. There were two outhouses, a single and a three seater that were stationed over the brook. These remained here well into the days that Luther ran the farm. The county health department eventually forced Luther to move them off the brook. Leona Ruth Van Dien Kochenash remembers snakes would hide out in the houses, causing great fright for her. These were mostly black snakes. David Van Dien tells how Ferris Barrett used to take out his dentures(uppers and lowers) and clack them together in his hand, pretending to want to 'eat' his grandchildren. David said the children were frightened by that form of playfulness.1
