Besides his wife, he is survived by two small daughters, Annette Sue and Patricia Louise; his parents, Mr and Mrs O E Mabee of Des Moines, a brother Willard of Dubuque, and a sister, Mrs C W (Mildred) Brown of Clifton, Ariz.
Twelve officers of the U S Navy attended the memorial services, including two from French Morocco, where Lt Mabee was stationed.
[Richard graduated in June 1945, but it was the Class of 1946. The Navy pushed them through in 3 years instead of 4 because of the war.]2
Anecdote* George Monthan (who is 94 years old and sharp as a tack) told me the following:
"After ATC, Ed and Dick were put in a squadron as Ensigns to be Weapons Officers, rather than pilots, for a big, twin engine bomber, carrier-based, that was planned to carry atomic weapons. Dick deployed to the Mediterranean, where he died in November 1951 while on a catapult shot off the carrier when his plane crashed into the sea.
"The Navy never recovered his body, but his family held a service in Des Moines, Iowa. I was able to get a plane to fly in a raging snowstorm to Des Moines. His father met me at the airport, and I stayed with them for a day or so."8
Burial* He was buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa, His name is between his parents on their tombstone.9
