Husband started soon after to Henry County, Ill. to get a home prepared while I got ready to keep house, and one year later in 1869 joined him there, where in less than 2 years we were again separated by the cruel war. He enlisted in Aug. 1862, leaving home Sept. 15, never to return, being killed instantly by a shell near Knoxville, Tenn., leaving an infant buried in Ill. I went to Lawton, Mich., a widow with a young daughter, May, who was afterwards the wife of O. L. Hill, to live with my parents, and lived there a few years. Married George Maybee of LaGrange in 1868, having lived in northern Michigan 8 years. Returned to Kendallville in March 1891. Buried daughter May by first husband in May 1893.
