Sketch of a Pioneer Citizen of Cedar Rapids
At 2:40 this morning the silent reaper visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Anthony, claiming the former its victim. For several weeks he has been suffering from a combination of lumbago and heart trouble which became serious last Saturday, since which time he has grown rapidly worse until death relieved him. Mr. Anthony was born in Brookfield, Madison county, New York, Dec. 23, 1820, being the oldest of five children, two of whom survive him. In 1847 he was married to Marilla H. Mabie, whose noble Christian life, energetic nature and cheery disposition have been an inspiration to him for more than fifty years. Their declining years have been years of unusual happiness, surrounded as they were with loving children and grandchildren, who have availed themselves of every opportunity to keep the cup of happiness in old age full. The aged wife, tp whom the entire community extends its sincerest sympathy at this time, together with seven of the nine children born to the union, were at the bedside of the deceased when the angel of death bore his spirit on its flight to eternal rest. The eldest son, F. A. Anthony of Chicago, arrived last night in time to be recognized and receive his father's blessing. The other children who survive him are Mrs. M. M. Hall, Mrs. E. O. Edson, Mrs. J. M. McElheran, Charles F. Anthony, James Riley Anthony and George A. Anthony, all of this city, who have been with him during his last illness. He was a member of the G.A.R., having fought valiantly with the Twentieth Iowa volunteers from l861 to l865. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony were charter members of the First Baptist church of this city, having united with same in l860. His character and religious principles have served to develop the highest type of citizenship and fatherhood. The funeral will be held from the family residence, 56 Sixteenth avenue west, at 2 p.m., Saturday"; copy owned by GMA
CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE, March 4 [sic], 1900; "Funeral of the late J. R. Anthony will be held at the residence, 56 15th Avenue West, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Members of T. Z. Cook Post and old soldiers are expected to be present."; information from Mrs. Barbara J. Garnant, Cedar Rapids.9

"CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE, Friday, 19 Aug 1910; "MARILLA MABIE ANTHONY; "God's finger touched her and she slept." "Marilla H. Mabie was born at Portage, Alleghany county, New York, March 22, 1824. She was married to James R. Anthony February 11, 1847, at Rockford, Ill. In March 1860, they removed to Cedar Rapids since which time they have lived in this city until March 1, 1900, when the devoted husband and companion for more than half a century passed beyond, leaving the aged wife a blessed memory of years of toil and accomplishment during the pioneer days of this vicinity. "Nine children came to the home, six of whom survive the mother -- Mrs. M. M. Hall of this city, Mrs. E. O. Edson of Miles City, Mont; Mrs. John McElheran of Ogden, Utah; F. A. Anthony, Chicago; J. R. Anthony, South Omaha, and G. A. Anthony, Washington, D. C. These sons and daughters have the profound sympathy of the community in their bereavement. "Mrs. Anthony was a charter member of the First Baptist church of this city, having unitied with the local church in 1860. "For several months she had rapidly declined until a beautiful release came while patiently waiting the welcome summons. "The funeral was held at the family residence, 56 Fifteenth avenue west at 2:30 this afternoon. Rev. John Hastie of the Calvary Baptist church conducted the services. Internment was in Linwood cemetery. "A long busy life devoted to her home and its demands, to the neighborhood and its needs, to the community and its opportunities, has gone out from among its accustomed surroundings. So much a part of every worthy local movement was she in her active years that her passing seems but a temporary absence on a mission for the general welfare. ""She is not dead; she has but passed/Beyond the mists that blinded here/Into the new and larger life/Of a serener atmosphere."1
Burial*19 August 1910 She was buried on 19 August 1910 at Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa.16
