Bernard Shoemaker

M, #3453, b. June 1938
Info* Information on him came from Paul and Vivien Turneaure #7 to early Maybee Society records.
Birth*June 1938 Bernard Shoemaker was born in June 1938.1
Marriage* He married Elizabeth Ann Turneaure, daughter of Paul Miltimore Turneaure and Vivien Cleman
(Witness) oObit9 December 2005 Bernard Shoemaker was mentioned in the obituary of Vivien Cleman on 9 December 2005 at Yakima, Washington; Vivien Cleman Turneaure passed away on December 1, 2005. Vivien was born on the family dairy farm in the Wenas Valley, WA, on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1912 to Edward (Ted) Cleman and Frances Colvin Watt. Her pioneer roots were very dear to her and, as the family historian, she instilled that pride in her children. Her great-grandfather Charles Agustin Clemen (for whom Mt Cleman was named) came to the Washington Territory in 1865 and established the first sheep ranch in the Yakima Valley. Vivien attended the one-room Cleman School for several years before the family moved to Yakima. She attended Washington Jr. High but transferred to Franklin Jr. High the first year it opened. She graduated from Yakima High in 1930.
Vivien was married to Paul M. Turneaure in the Cleman home on September 7, 1935. They had been married 61 years at the time of Paul's death in 1997. Her family was very important to her. In later years when she could no longer travel, the telephone was her constant link to her children and grandchildren. Vivien is survived by her three children: Elizabeth (Bernard) Shoemaker, Harlingen, TX, John (Brigitte) Turneaure, Palo Alto, CA, and Dorothy Morales, Yakima; her six beloved grandchildren: Evelyn McCoard, David Shoemaker, Lori Peterman, Tanya Turneaure, Stefan Turneaure, Monserrat Morales; 16 great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Dorothy Hall and Jen Cox, both of Yakima.
Vivien's grandmother Mary Elizabeth Kershaw Cleman taught her to knit at the young age of 6, which began her life-long love of the fiber arts. She was the knitting instructor at the Bon Marche for 13 years. She learned to weave in her late 40's and fulfilled a dream of learning to spin in her early 70's. Working with the fiber from the gathering of the wool to completion of a garment gave her great joy. Family members were often the recipients of these loving creations. She taught all her children to knit, and her daughters carry on the enthusiasm Vivien had for this art form.2

Anecdote*25 May 1910 George E. Mabee, a sub-foreman, employed at the Speir Falls power plant, was killed by electricity on November 16, 1908, while at work at the plant and action for $25,000 damages was begun by his widow, Florence M. Mabee against George W. Dunn, et al., receivers of the Hudson River Water Power company. Trial of the action was begun In supreme court Monday afternoon before Justice Kellogg.
The plaintiff's intestate was a shift foreman, having charge of the plant for a tour of eight hours with four men under him. It is alleged that when he was killed that be was engaged in the work of removing a current transformer, which was useless, and was doing the work under the personal direction of Superintendent Anderson and that through the negligence of the superintendent, Mabee met his death. Mr. Anderson received a severe shock at the same time and was unconscious for a while.
Defendant claims there was no negligence on its part and that the deceased assumed the risks of the employment and was aware of all the dangers, having been foreman for a year and a half prior to his death.
When the trial of the case was resumed Tuesday, on motion of Attorney Curtis, the court granted an order allowing the receivers to settle with the plaintiff for $1,500 and the action was withdrawn.
