He has been engaged on his own account in lumbering, farming, and merchandizing, and now owns with his son Ernest D. the "upper grist-mill" in East Randolph, located on the site of the first grist-mill of the place erected by Philemon Hall in 1824. Ferris Scott passed from this earth to the joys of the blest. From excessive labors as pastor and teacher in the public schools, blindness succeeded by partial paralysis overpowered him in his good work, his sickness dating from March 22d. During the Rebellion he served as Chaplain in the 148th Regiment N.Y.V., and since the war has devoted his time and energies to teaching and pastoral labors. He was Principal of the Brookfield Academy in some of its most flourishing days, and will be remembered by many residents of this town, who were then his pupils, as a sympathetic and thorough teacher, and we trust that his wise counsels are still remembered. He was also ordained a minister of the Gospel of the Baptist church, at this place. He was forty-nine years of age, having been born in Putman County, N.Y., May 8, 1830.4 |
