Marriage*September 1888 Hattie Bell Maybee married Oscar Royal Starr, son of Comfort Dexter Starr and Luthera C. Chase, in September 1888 at Nebraska.3
Emigration*1907 Hattie Bell Maybee and Oscar Royal Starr emigrated in 1907, They homesteaded in Nebraska and built a cattle spread. Oscar Starr vowed that each of his children would have a high school education, but Eli, the nearest town was 40 miles away. The oldest girl was attending school in Mount Vernon, living with grandparents. The thought of a warmer climate, good schools and available work induced Mr. Sarr to sell his homestead and move the family to Washington state. The Starrs packed all their belongings, the seven children, enough food for the trip and boarded the train for the west coast in 1907.4
Anecdote* Oscar Starr, one of the old-time settlers in western Nebraska, resides on his well-improved farm in section 4, township 33, range 35, Cherry county. He has always done his full share in the upbuilding of the community in which he lives, and is highly esteemed as a man of sterling character and strict integrity.
Mr. Starr was born in Vernon county, Wisconsin, June 4. 1866. His father, Comfort Starr, was a farmer by occupation, and one of the pioneers of eastern Nebraska. He drove in this state with a team and covered wagon containing his household goods, in 1876, locating in Butler county, where his death occurred in the fall of 1878. Our subject settled in Cherry county in 1887 and remained there up to the early spring of 1908, when he moved to Mt. Vernon, Washington. He had nothing to start with, and took up a homestead on Niobrara river, his first building being a log shack. He got a team of bulls and began to break up his farm, batching it for the first two years. He gradually built up his place and proved up on it, and then moved down on the river bank. After getting started he added to his acreage, and now has a ranch of six hundred and eighty acres, one hundred of which is cultivated. He has good buildings, plenty of water, and has made a fine place of it. He has seen many hard times, and often became discouraged during the drouth periods and other failures of crops.
Mr. Starr was married in 1890 to Miss Hattie Maybee, daughter of William Maybee, a pioneer in Holt and Cherry counties. Mr. and Mrs. Starr have a family of seven children, named as follows: William, May, Louie, Roy; Laura, Murray and Cora.
Politically Mr. Starr is a stanch Republican, and has held numerous local offices, and was serving as justice of the peace at the time of his removal to the coast. He is always active in affairs of interest to his community, and lends his time and influence to the betterment of home conditions. Mr. Starr has always been an enthusiastic huntsman, and has been all over this part of the country and the reservations in South Dakota, camping out for weeks at a time, and has brought down some fine specimens of game of all kinds.5

Mr. Garner was born in Wilkes county, North Carolina, October 11, 1870. His father, Isaac Garner, was a farmer and homesteader in Cherry county, coming here in 1892 from North Carolina, where he was reared and served in the southern army under impressment, his sympathies being with the north. Our subject's mother was Miss Adelaide Caudle, of old southern blood, arid he was the second member in her family of four children. When he was seven years of age the family came to Dodge county as pioneers, and there he was reared and educated, attending the country schools. When twenty years old he moved to Cherry county, and was here throughout the Indian troubles of 1890-91, witnessing many exciting incidents of that time. He located on a homestead west of Cody, and also took up a tree claim near there, batching it for six years and leading a regular pioneer existence. His first buildings were all of sod, and he started in to build up his farm, on which he proved up, then left the place and moved to his present farm in 1902, located on the Niobrara river. Here he has established a fine estate, and has improved the place with good buildings, fences and up-to-date machinery. He has one hundred and twenty acres cultivated, and altogether operates eight hun [page 483] dred and eighty acres of land, engaging in ranching and stock raising. Together with his brother he owns upwards of two thousand acres of valuable farm and ranch lands.
Mr. Garner was married in 1896 to Miss Rosa Maybee, daughter of William and Rachel Maybee, pioneer homesteaders in Cherry county. Mr. and Mrs. Garner are the parents of three children, namely: Lee, Roxy and Rose. The family is highly esteemed in their home community, and are popular and well liked by all who know them.

(Mentioned) oObit3 July 1915 Rachel Ann Rhodes was mentioned in the obituary of of William H. Mabie on 3 July 1915 at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York; William H. Mabie of Steamer Gardner Dies Suddenly After Leaving Boat at Kingston. Falling as he stepped into the stage in which he had planned to go to his home in Port Ewen after seeing that the steamer Gardner, of which he was the captain, had been made fast for the night at the dock at Sleightsburgh, Captain William H. Mabie died suddenly of heart disease at 6:30 o'clock Thursday evening.
Captain Mabie, one of the oldest as well as one of the best known men on this section of the Hudson river, had gone about his duties on the Gardner as usual during the day and, so far as is known, had not complained of feeling ill until after the boat had been wharfed and he was about to return home for the night
About 71 years of age, the veteran river captain had seen years of active service, having been in the employ of the Cornell Towing Company for a long period of time, during which he had charge of the tugboat Samuel Cornell. He was also captain of the "H. S. Romer" for some time and had been in command of the steamboat Gardner for the past ten years.
Despite his advanced age. Captain Mabie was one of the most active men along the river and had missed but few days from his employment through illness. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Henry and Wallace, both of Port Ewen, and both engaged aboard the "Gardner."
Captain Mabie was one of the best known men in the downtown section of the city, having a host of friends who will greatly miss his hearty handshake and cheery word of greeting.8

(Witness) oObit14 April 1897 David Cole was mentioned in the obituary of Catherine Mabie on 14 April 1897 at Chittenango, New York; The late Mrs. Charles Cole was born April 26, 1829, on the old homestead now owned and occupied by Oliver Mabie. She was the youngest of seven children born to David and Catharine Bellinger Mabie. David died Febeuary,1856, while his wife survived until eight years ago. Of these seven children, Simon B. died twenty years ago, and Mrs. Cole died last Tuesday, April 6th, of heart failure, being ill with catarrhal pneumonia from which she had been suffering for seven days. The age of the surviving sisters and brothers is full of interest, as Mrs. Thomas Freeborn is 78 years, Mrs. Irene Warner is 76 years, and Mrs. Noble Wilcox is 73years. There are two brothers, Oliver and William, the latter will be 70 in November, and has been unable to walk for thirty years, having suffered from paralysis. Mrs. Cole had always been very kind to this afflicted brother, caring very tenderly for him, although Oliver Mabie makes him his special charge. She would often take him home with her for several weeks and bestow upon him her tenderest attention and care. The deceased was married to Charles Cole, April 20, 1848, and is survived by the husband and two sons David and Gideon, also one grandchild. The funeral was very largely attended at the Independent church. A profusion of potted plants was placed in and around the altar. Rev. Philo Cowles, a warm personal friend of the deceased, preached from the text found in I. Corinthians, chap. 3, verses 21, 22, 23, and paid a glowing tribute to the worth of the deceased. Rev. P. Z Kinnie and family rendered the musical selections with great ability. The bearers were Joseph Shaver, George Dominick, William Chandler and Royal Hoag. Interment was made in the cemetery at this place.7
