oObit*27 September 1888  On 27 September 1888 at New York the obituary of Elizabeth Mabie read: Mrs. Betsey Tallman, who died at the residence of her son, Capt. Elias Tallman of Castile, on September 7, 1888, had reached the age of 94 years and 4 months. She was first married in Dutchess Co., N.Y., where she was born, to Mr. Hull, by whom she had one son, W.H. Hull, at Belvidere, Illinois. In 1814, after the death of Mr. Hull, she married Giles Tallman and with him, moved to the "Genesee Country," in the spring of 1816 and bought the "Betterments" of an early settler, named Johnson, on the west side of Silver Lake and resided there until her death, having been on the same farm for 71 years. The last 50 years of her life, she was a widow. Mr. Talman died in 1838. She had five children by her late husband and whom are all living except for one daughter. She never rode on a train, or even the canal. She did twice visit her old home in Dutchess Co., traveling by wagon each time. She was the oldest member of Castile Baptist church. She was buried in Mt. Hope cemetery in Perry, beside her husband, whose remains had been removed from the old Tallman neighborhood burying ground near the head of the lake. Mrs. Tallman was probably the oldest resident of the county and stood at the head of five generations, when she died.10 
Burial She and Giles Tallman were buried at Hope Cemetery, Perry, Wyoming County, New York. Inscription "Giles Tallman; Aug 30, 1783; Aug 23, 1839; Betsey; his wife; Apr 27, 1794; Feb 7, 1888."11,12

Anecdote*1872 In the "Delavan Republican" published Sep 4, 1873 is an article by Stephen Gates Mabie quoting Elias Mabie. dated 1872 "Elias Mabie, son of Jacob Mabie, grandson of Elder Daniel Mabie, seventy years old has two children one son (a genius) one daughter west of Freeport, Illinois. Elias lives at Clinton Jnct., Wisc." there is more here, but I am having trouble getting it to match the facts I have. Belva Perry.11

Anecdote* Went with parents to Castile, NY about 1816. Settled near Rockford, IL 1844, then Burlington and Cedar Rapids, IA. Elias and Giles Mabie constructed the first Baptist Church of Pike, Wyoming Co. NY 1833. According to his nephew, Giles Turneaure: "Giles was for many years local and traveling agent for the John W. Many Manufacturing Co. of Rockford, IL. During the time was resident agent at Paris, France; while there he went to London, England, and secured from that country the patent and sale right to manufacture the Many combined mower and reaper in England." From this situation perhaps arose the supposition that he was the inventor of the first reaper."1

Note*1832  John, his wife Maria, and children moved in 1832 to Crawford County, Pennsylvania. John was one of founders of Spring & Cussawago Baptist Church. In 1843 the family settled near Belvidere, Boone, Illinois, and in 1846-1850 in Florence Twp., Stephenson Co., Illinois. The family moved to Illinois in two covered wagons, carrying simple household furniture, a trunk full of victuals, the parents and 8 children. John Turrneaure's big house of quarried limestone, built in 1855 in Florence Twp. is still standing. When Lincoln and Douglas held their debate in Freeport, Illinois, John, who had the finest carriage in the area, drove Lincoln from the railroad station to the debate site. Some 20 or 25 years later the Lincoln carriage was destroyed when the barn of Maria and John's son Albert burned in Dickinson County Iowa. In 1869 John and Maria, with their two unmarried children George and Peter and a married son, Harrison, moved to Clinton, Wisconsin in 1832. 
Death*30 June 1889 Maria Mabie died on 30 June 1889 at Milford, Dickinson County, Iowa, at age 83. 
Burial* She and John Turneaure were buried at Clinton Cemetery, Clinton, Rock County, Wisconsin.5

oObit*28 November 1905  On 28 November 1905 at Belvidere, Illinois, the obituary of Permelia Mabie read: Mrs. Parmelia Batchelder, one of the early settlers of Winnebago county and aunt of Jacob Mabie, of this city, died at the age of 84 years yesterday afternoon shortly before 4 o'clock at her home in Rockford, in which she has resided for the past 37 years. Death came after a very brief, but acute illness, though the aged woman has been to invalid for the past fifteen years, rarely leaving the house during that time. Paralysis is given as the cause of death.
Mrs. Batchelder's life was that characteristic of a pioneer. Her maiden name was Parmelia Mabie and her birthplace, Castyle, N. Y., March 27, 1821. She was one of eleven children all of whom have passed away.
Early in 1844 after her marriage to Seymour Gilbert, they followed members of the Mabie family to Belvidere. The journey to Chicago was made by boat and thence to Belvidere in a wagon. Rescomb Mabie, one of her brothers, was an early settler in Harlem, Winnebago county, and for many years was a prominent member of the State street Baptist church in Rockford. Peter Mabie settled in Roscoe and Aaron and Daniel near Belvidere.
Seymour Gilbert was a tinsmith by trade and was one of the first to go to Rockford, moving there from Belvidere in 1840. He established a shop near Second street and State streets and for some time the family lived in a house just north of St. James' church on North Second street in the neighboring city.
After a few years spent at his trade he went out of the business and bought the farm later owned by John Budlong southeast of the city. That was in the days before railroads were running between Rockford and Chicagn and the farmers hauled their grain to 1he Chicago market by wagon. Mrs. Batchelder has often spoken of making the journey with her husband and mentioned the bad condition of the roads. At many places on the route and even in the limits of Chicago there were deep holes marked by the familiar sign, written on planks, "No Bottom Here." Mr. Gilbert suffered a sun stroke on one of these trips and died two years later, in the year 1850.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert, only one of whom, Charles Gilbert, is living He resides at Traer, Tama county, Iowa.
After the death of Mr. Gilbert the widow continued to live on the farm. K. B. Batchelder several years later was employed at carpentry work by Mrs. Gilbert, became acquainted with her, and they were married in 1864. In 1868 they sold the farm and with their 3-year-old son moved to the house in which the family has since resided. At that time only an occasioual house was seen in that part of, the city and all the land between) Kishwaukee street and the river was covered by hickory timber. Seventh street was a corn field. Mr. Batchelder died in 1888.
The funeral will be held from the house Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the services will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Roy Perkins.
Jacob Mabie will attend the funeral tomorrow. He is the only survivor in this part of the country of eleven families who bore the Mabie name. Mr. Mabic's father was the late Aaron Mabie.
The deceased was very well known to many among the older residents of Belvidere who still survive and held by them in the highest esteem.1 
Burial* She and Kimball Batchelder were buried at Cedar Bluff Cemetery, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. Inscription "Kimball Batchelder; 1824-1888; Permelia his wife; 1811-1905; Seymour Gilbert; 1817-1858."10

oObit*14 August 1833  On 14 August 1833 at Geneva, New York, the obituary of Eli Mabie read: Died on Thursday, the 18th ult., Eli Mabie, son of Mr. Levi Mabie, of Delhi, Delaware co., in the 20th year of his age, was killed by the upsetting of a load of hay. It was precipitated from the load upon the tines of a pitchfork which entered his body and caused almost instant death.4

oObit*20 July 1904  On 20 July 1904 at Mansfield, Pennsylvania, the obituary of Melissa Rachel Mabie read: Melissa R. Shaw, wife of Milton Shaw, died at theirt home in Sullivan, July 9th, at 11:15 p. m., after nearly a year's suffering
She was born in Delaware county, N. Y., Dec 11th, 1838, one of a family of fifteen, three sisters surviving. She came to Sullivan with her parents when two years old. Mr and Mrs Shaw were married Dec 29, 1859. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are left to mourn the loving mother, namely: Mrs Samuel Smith, Little Marsh; Mrs Fred Bryan, Mainesburg; Charles M. Shaw; Mardin; Elmer, Leon, and Homer Shaw, Sullivan....6 
Burial* She and Charles Milton Shaw were buried at Mainesburg Cemetery, Mainesburg, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.7,8
