Ruth Pors was born Edna Ruth Mann in Regina, Saskatchewan on Feb. 7, 1925. She was the only child of John Fletcher Mann and Dr. Edna Kelley Mann.
Ruth spent much of her childhood growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, where she graduated from high school. She met her husband, the late William (Bill) Perron Pors, at Milton College and they were married March 31, 1951, in Rockford, Ill.
They moved to Madison in 1953 where Bill graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1955. The couple then moved to Marshfield where Bill joined his father, Charles Miller Pors in the Pors and Pors law firm. In 1964 they moved to Harvey, Ill., where Bill directed a Savings and Loan and opened his own law office. He died in August 1965 of a heart attack at the age of 39. Ruth moved back to Marshfield with her four children the following year and was employed by Citizens Bank until her retirement.
Ruth was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), PEO, Marshfield Upham House and St. Alban's Episcopal Church. She was an amateur genealogist and historian and contributed to "The Marshfield Story 1872-1997," which was published by the Marshfield History Project. Her courage and dedication to her children, friends, and the organizations she cherished will always be remembered.
Ruth is survived by her three sons, Charles Miller Pors II (Jenny Vanderlin-Pors) of Madison, Thomas Mann Pors (Elena Korakianitou) of Seattle, Wash., Richard William Pors of Madison; grandson Alexandros William Pors attending Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash; and step-grandson Pavlos Nelson (Louisiana).
Ruth was also preceded in death by her daughter, Janice Ann Pors who died in 1974. The losses of both her husband and daughter marked her life, causing more sadness than a wife and mother should bear at such a young age.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Marshfield with a coffee hour immediately following. Reverend Deacon Georgeanne Cusic will officiate. A family burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers or plants memorial contributions may be made to: The Northwood County Historical Society/Upham Mansion or the University of Wisconsin Marshfield/Wood County (please designate "Pors Award").
Special thanks are given to the Purdy Retirement Home, the nursing staff at Ingleside Nursing Home in Mt. Horeb, Wis., and Dr. Jodi McGraw (Barneveld) for their loving care and compassion.
Throughout her illness, Ruth remained true to her soul and personality -- kind, loving and always with a smile.6
Burial She was buried at Hillside Cemetery, Marshfield, Wood County, Wisconsin.6

oObit*  The obituary of Jack Aaron Mabee read: John Aaron Mabee who is better known to the world as Sourdough Jack Mabee (which, he would remind us, was spelled without the "Y") died April 17, 1995, of heart failure. He was born, 1920, and had celebrated his 75th Birthday in Florida in March, with 10 members of the Maybee/Mabie/Mabee family in attendance. He had suffered his share of illness and health problems, but he was so vibrant that his death was a great shock to all of us.
At the time of his death he was preparing for the Communicator a write-up of his recent trip to visit family in Denver and Atlanta, to attend the Maybee Society Reunion in Florida, to visit the National (Episcopal) Cathedral that meant a good deal to him as he was an Episcopalian andbecause of the great love he had for Native Americans, he went to see the exhibit at the Smithsonian. While there he also visited Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. His trip included a visit with Kim and Gary Mabee and the opportunity to see the Mabee Farm House at Rotterdam Junction. He finished with a visit with Joe and Jan -- good friends in the Northeast. He was so grateful to be able to attend the reunion and was very appreciative of his hosts and friends on the trip, including Jack and Mary Maybee, George Franchere, De Brenner, Harold Maybee (a brother to his good friend Mel Maybee) Kim and Gary and others of the family.
Jack was always busy, planning new projects and experimenting with new recipes. His cookbooks and recipes were famous worldwide. He sometimes supplemented his income as Santa Claus and other personalities whose portraits were translated into beautiful Christmas cards and advertisements. Besides his sourdough business he also, in his earlier years, was a deck hand on riverboats, a trader in Alaska with his Mukluk shop, an official for the Department of Veteran affairs.
Sourdough was an enthusiastic supporter of the Maybee Society and we will miss his calls, letters and visits. To learn more about his life, see Newsletters 8:8; 13:2,3; 19:6; 21:6.7
