oObit*16 January 2015  On 16 January 2015 at La Crosse, Wisconsin, the obituary of Pauline O. Maybee read: Pauline Skrede, 89, of Soldiers Grove passed away peacefully Jan. 15, 2015, at Sannes Skogdalen Heim in Soldiers Grove.
She was born Aug. 6, 1925, to Roy and Florence (Hutchcroft) Maybee. She attended school at North Clayton School and graduated from Soldiers Grove High School. She married Lawrence Skrede July 25, 1942. They began their life together farming in the Soldiers Grove area and later moved to Beloit, Wis. Together, she and Lawrence, also known as "Scratchy," managed a restaurant in Beloit, and later returned to Soldiers Grove to manage a restaurant there. It was during that time that Lawrence was killed in a car accident. Pauline's quiet strength persevered throughout the years.
She wore many hats throughout her life as she worked hard to provide for her family. She retired from North Crawford School after working 22 years in food service, but had also been a city bus driver in Beloit, worked at a canning factory in Janesville, became a real estate agent and worked for Uglum Realty in Mt. Sterling, and Hall Realty in Viroqua. She earned her broker's license and worked with her husband in the auctioneering and sales business. She was also substitute Postmaster in Soldiers Grove for many years. It was after retirement that Pauline found the time to be a dedicated volunteer in her community. Being of service to others is what gave her purpose in life. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and received the Thanks Badge, which is the highest adult award given in Girl Scouts. She helped many area girls receive the Silver and Gold Awards in scouting and traveled with them on trips to New York, Savannah, Ga., and even Jamaica. Pauline loved to travel and enjoyed taking trips with her sisters and friends. Her favorite trip was having the opportunity to travel to Norway to meet her husband's relatives and visit his father's home place. She enjoyed corresponding with these relatives and was still keeping in touch with them through email and Facebook. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her family and especially her grandchildren through Facebook. She was an active member and has served as treasurer of the WECCA at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, an active member, membership chairman and served as treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 220, for many years. She served on the North Crawford Rescue Squad for 36 years and was twice awarded EMT of the Year. She received the "Friend to Education" award and was known as the "Campbell Soup Lady" as she assisted with collecting, clipping and sending in labels to earn equipment and supplies for North Crawford Schools. She also enjoyed volunteering at Sannes Skogdalen and assisted the residents in activities and playing bingo for many years.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; and stepmother, Hazel Maybee; her husband, Lawrence; two sons, Roger and Ronald; a brother, Walter Maybee; two sisters, Beverly Sokolik and Shirley Maybee; daughter-in-law, June Skrede; grandson, Daysun Benson; sisters-in-law, Betty Maybee, Clarice Lewison, Kathryn Anderson, Norma Miller; brothers-in-law, Fred Sokolik, Otto Lewison, Gordon Anderson, Jerald Turben, Kenneth Skrede and Russell Miller.
She is survived by two sons, Robert (special friend, Sherry), and Andrew (Jeanne) Skrede; a daughter, Kathy (Gary) Benson; grandsons, Dylan Skrede (friend, Sarah), Justus Benson (Samara), and Chad Measner; granddaughters, Tami Skrede, Dawn (Mike) Palmisano, Shari (Tony) Barlow, Tammy (Bill) Kontny, Angie (Mike) Clapper, Misty (Don) Bomkamp and Shaelyn (Chad) Crutchley. She also had 18 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove. Pastor Lorie Betz will officiate and burial will be at the Belgium Ridge Cemetery in rural Viroqua. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. with an auxiliary and prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Friends may also call from 10 to 11 p.m. Monday at the church.
Memorials may be given to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, the Auxiliary of the William A. Schoville Post 220 of the American Legion and Vernon Hospice.9
