Winner of the Hiram Gee art scholarship, which entitles a student to two years study abroad, he won a medal in 1906 for an exhibit in a Paris solon. It was one of many awards he received for his work.
He was recognized in later years as a photographer, many of his pictures of outstanding Anericans appeared in leading magazines.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs Metta M. Maybee.17 
Burial He was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum, Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia.19

Her husband and oldest son, Roderick M. lll from Texas were with her at the time of her death. Ruby is survived by her husband; two sons; and five grandchildren, Roderick McLeod Maybee lll of Seabrook, TX, his wife Kathleen, grandson Jim Allred, granddaughter Wendy Murillo, grandson RMM lV, granddaughter Heather Lee Robinson and youngest son Miles Randal Maybee of Sunland, CA with granddaughter Michele. There will be no formal memorial service. Her husband will retain her ashes. After his death their ashes will be combined and placed at rest alongside her mother and father in Petaluma Cypress Hill Memorial Park rock garden.7 
Death*1 September 2014 Roderick McLeod Maybee III died on 1 September 2014 at Navarre Beach, Santa Rosa County, Florida, at age 65; A Louisiana man died in an area hospital after being swept out into the Gulf of Mexico off Navarre Beach on Monday.
Roderick M. Maybee, 65, of Baton Rouge, La., was swimming in the Gulf in front of the Navarre Towers when he was carried out into the water, likely by a rip current, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office.
Lifeguard and fire responders were able to recover Maybee from the waves and began performing CPR.
At 2:30 p.m., sheriff's deputies blocked off traffic so a Lifeflight helicopter could airlift Maybee to an area hospital. Maybee was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The family was at Navarre Beach vacationing, according to the sheriff's office.
Conditions were rough, and red flags flew Monday in Navarre.8 
oObit*5 September 2014  On 5 September 2014 the obituary of Roderick McLeod Maybee III read: Our loving husband and father Roderick McLeod Maybee, III passed away Monday September 1 at the age of 65. A long-time resident of Seabrook, Texas, he recently moved to Baton Rouge. Rod was devoted to his family, friends and church. Together with his wife Kathleen they raised four children. Born to Roderick and Ruby Maybee on December 27, 1948, he is survived by his wife of 28 years Kathleen Maybee, his father Roderick Maybee, his daughter Wendy Murillo and husband Alberto, his son Jimmy Allred and wife Connie, his daughter Heather Robinson and husband Mike, his son Roddy Maybee and wife Lesli, his brother Miles Maybee, his six grandchildren, Cole, Kayla, Lilli, Lucas, Reese and Ruby and a host of loving family members. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruby Maybee. Rod worked for Shell Oil Co. in various positions in purchasing for 23 years and he retired from FMC Technology. He has enjoyed his time of retirement with his loving wife by touring the U.S. in their motorhome and traveling abroad. Rod also enjoyed music, LSU football and spending time with his family and friends. Visiting hours will be observed at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 10:00 am until service time. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm.9

Prominent in milling circles throughout Ontario, also millwrighting, being with Wm. and J. G. Greey, Toronto for a few years he entered into partnership with Graham Mills, Eganville, Ont., on November last year. He leaves to mourn one brother, E.C. Maybee, Canadian General Electric, Peterborough, Ont; two sisters Mrs. Clarke Leslie, Mrs. James Fanning also of that city; his wife and four children, Mrs. Clifton Moreton, Norval, Ont., Edward of the staff of Norwich High School; Grace and Fred at home, and one grandson Herbert Moreton. The remains were brought from Ottawa to Eganville, Friday, where a service was held in the home. Interment was made in Port Hope Cemetery on Saturday March 19th. The pallbearers were six cousins of the deceased; Stanley Mill, John McElroy, Charlie Taylor, Fred Taylor, Fred Maybee, Lafontaine Maybee.9

(Witness) oObit30 March 1932 Ida Christine Maybee was mentioned in the obituary of Ephraim Wesley Byron Maybee on 30 March 1932 at Georgetown, Halton County, Ontario, Canada; Passed away in his 56th year on March 17, 1932. Ephraim Wesley Bryon Maybee, beloved husband of Susanna Marshall. Mr. Maybee entered the Ottawa Civic Hospital on March 12th and succumbed after two operations for kidney trouble. Prominent in milling circles throughout Ontario, also millwrighting, being with Wm. and J. G. Greey, Toronto for a few years he entered into partnership with Graham Mills, Eganville, Ont., on November last year. He leaves to mourn one brother, E.C. Maybee, Canadian General Electric, Peterborough, Ont; two sisters Mrs. Clarke Leslie, Mrs. James Fanning also of that city; his wife and four children, Mrs. Clifton Moreton, Norval, Ont., Edward of the staff of Norwich High School; Grace and Fred at home, and one grandson Herbert Moreton. The remains were brought from Ottawa to Eganville, Friday, where a service was held in the home. Interment was made in Port Hope Cemetery on Saturday March 19th. The pallbearers were six cousins of the deceased; Stanley Mill, John McElroy, Charlie Taylor, Fred Taylor, Fred Maybee, Lafontaine Maybee.7
