Death* | 14 October 1902 | Simon Mabee died on 14 October 1902 at Thomson, Washington County, New York, at age 32; Simon Mabee, of Greenwich, formerly of Rotterdam Junction, and a son of the late John Mabee ot Rotterdam, was found Wednesday drowned under the Hudson Valley Railway company's bridge, which crosses the Hudson river at Thomson, Washington county. It is thought that while crossing the bridge he fell from it into the water. He is survived by a wife and one son.8,9 |
Anecdote* | 18 October 1902 | 1902 newspaper stories: FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED. Simon Mabee's Death a subject of Considerable Speculation. There is great, mystery connected with the death of Slmon Mabee, formerly of Rotterdam, the striker who deserted the union and 'returned to work on the Hudson Valley railroad, and whose body was fount in the Hudson river north of Schuylerville on Wednesday. The body was found face down In the river by men in the employ of the company. The position of the body Indicated that he had fallen from the railroad bridge that crosses the river at that point. Some of those who saw the body in the river were of the opinion that he might have stumbled while crossing the bridge And that he fell into the river. Others declared that Mabee had previously crossed the bridge hundreds of times at night and that there is but little probability of his having fallen. The murder theory is supported by the fact that his actions in returning to the company's employ aroused a bitter feeling against him. He was one of the few men who deserted the strikers and the feeling against them was quite intense. Mabee's home was in Greenwich and he left Schuylerville at 11 o'clock at night with the purpose of going to his home. It was customary for him to return home by the same route and at about the same time every night It is pointed out that it would have been an easy matter for an enemy of Mabee to have lain in wait for him on the bridge, to have leaped upon him and thrown him over the bridge. Mabee was 26 years old and leaves a widow and an infant son. HOWEVER in the Gloversville Daily Leader October 18, 1902 Death of Mabee was Accidental Coroner Pattee of Fort Edward was in Greenwich Thursday and again examined the remains of Simon Mabee, whose body was found Wednesday morning in the river at Thomson. He decided that further investigation was not necessary, as in his opinion his death was accidental, as there was no proof of foul play as suspected by some. The funeral of Mabee occurred on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended.10 |
Burial* | He and Addie Elizabeth Monroe were buried at Greenwich Cemetery, Greenwich, Washington County, New York. Inscription "Simon Mabee; Feb 27, 1870; Oct 14, 1902 Addie E. Monroe; wife of Simon Mabee; Mar 6, 1870; July 5, 14939."11 |
