Mr. Mabie was proud to be the neighborhood milk man and worked for Deary Brothers in Framingham, MA for 46 years. He is a veteran of The United States Navy and served during World War II. Newell was a devoted husband of 64 years to his beloved wife Mary. He was happiest when he could be out in his yard, working endlessly to care for his lawn and home. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren. Newell is survived by his only son, Dr. Kevin N. McGrath Post #74 in Framingham and member of the V.F.W, he was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. However, the greatest love and joy in his life were his grandchildren. He is survived by 2 sons, William R. He was awarded several honorable discharge emblems and ribbons; including the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ribbon (2 Bronze Stars), the American Area Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed at the Dennison Mfg. Company in Framingham for over 40 years, mostly in their Copier Division. A longtime member and Past Post Commander of the American Legion James J. McGrath Post #74 in Framingham and member of the V.F.W, he was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. However, the greatest love and joy in his life were his grandchildren. He is survived by 2 sons, William R. Furness, former owner and publisher of the Glens Falls Times, who died in a Utica hospital yesterday after a long illness. He was 78. Furness became manager of the Glens Falls Times in 1907 and purchased the Evening Daily 10 years later. He sold the newspaper in 1927 to the Glens Falls Post Co., which also publishes the morning Star-Post. He retained the Times job-printing business and reorganized it as the Spotlight Program Co., which he operated until he retired in 1952. A native of Gloversville, Furness is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Mabee, Saratoga Springs.5 |

Prudence was the daughter of Adrian Whitford Mather and Jessie McNair Mather, both deceased, of Albany, New York. She was a graduate of the St. Agnes School, Albany, New York and Wheelock College, Boston. After graduation from Wheelock, she established a year-round nursery in her home in Albany, New York until her marriage to Douglas Williams Mabee, Saratoga Springs, New York in July, 1940. Initially they lived in New York City, then Rye, New York after which they established numerous residents (sic) upon his retirement in 1970, Stratton Mt., Vermont, Egertown, Maine, Sawgrass CC, Ponte Vedra, Florida, Linvile Ridge, North Carolina, Vicars Landing, PVB. She was a member of the New York Junior League and the 10th Twig of the United Hospital, Port Chester, New York. Her ancestors are the first Governor of Missouri, Alexander McNair, and Rev. He was formerly president of Marvin Neitzel Corp. of Troy and director of National Folding Box Co., New Haven, Conn. He was also past president and member of Saratoga Golf club and a member of Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis club, Del Ray Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Saratoga. Reading rooms, Sons of the American Revolution, a Masonic fraternity and Bethesda Episcopal Church. Mr. Mabee is survived by his wife, Mrs. Viola Thompson Butler Mabee, whom he married March 11, 1950. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Edna Louise Marvin Mabee, who died in 1949. He Is survived by his wife; a daughter, Edna Louise Smith of Hartford, Conn; a son, Douglass William Mabee of Rye; a brother, David Walton Mabee and a sister, Mrs. Charles V. oObit | 18 April 2004 | On 18 April 2004 at Edgartown, Massachusetts, the obituary of Douglass Williams Mabee read: Douglass Williams Mabee Jr., age 89, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., formerly of Rye, N.Y., Edgartown, Stratton Mountain, Vt., and Linville Ridge, N.C., died March 19 at Vicar's Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., after a short illness. He was born in Troy, N.Y., on Oct. 12, 1914 and grew up in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was a 1929 graduate of Fessenden, a 1933 graduate of Hotchkiss, and a 1937 graduate and rowed on the #150 Crew at Yale. He served as lieutenant in the USNR between 1943 and 1945 aboard the DE63 USS Ira Jeffrey in the North Atlantic Convoy, later converted to APD44 to take on an Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) for the invasion of Japan. He served in the Pacific Theater Operations Forces Inner Japan Sea, Wakayama. He was a Member of DECO (Destroyer Escort Commanding Officers). Mr. Mabee was a salesman for 25 years for National Folding Box, a family company that merged with Federal Paper Board Company. He was a former vice president and director of the Adirondack Trust Company. He was governor of Apawamis Golf Club, director of YMCA and United Way in Rye, NY., a founder of Stratton Mountain ski area in Vermont, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Holland Society of New York. He was most proud of his involvement as one of three general partners in the founding of Farm Neck Association and Farm Neck Golf Club, organized to protect 600 acres from real estate development. He was married on July 27, 1940 to the former Prudence Brattle Mather, who preceded him in death on May 9, 2001. He was the son of the late Douglass Walter and Edna Louise (Marvin) Mabee. He is survived by a son, Douglass Mather Mabee of Saratoga Springs, N.Y; daughters, Martha Wells Mabee of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Maria Mabee Mason of Bainbridge Island, Wash; grandchildren Alexandra Fordyce Flowers, Jessica Francis Mabee, Douglass Timothy Mabee, Brittain Mather Mason and Adrian Allen Mason; a great-grandson, Ethan Mather Flowers, a niece, Adele (Dee) Clewley Park, and a nephew, Lewis Monroe Smith. Memorial services will be held June 18 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.14 |
