(Witness) oObit | 1 May 1914 | Fred J. Mabee was mentioned in the obituary of Edith Marie Mabee on 1 May 1914 at Waverly, Tioga County, New York; Edith Marie, daughter of. Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Mabee died at l0:30 o'clock Tuesday evening at the home of her parents at 103 Maple street under particularly sad circumstances. The daughter Who was nearly sixteen years of age, was of a gentle loving disposition and was idolized by her parents and was the favorite of her young companions.. A little over six months ago it was found necessary to amputate her left leg a short distance above the knee for a malignant growth which appeared on the bone. About two weeks ago she was taken to the People's hospital where an operation was performed to remove pus from one of her lungs. It was necessary to remove a portion of a rib in order to remove the pus. She seemed to be improving, until Tuesday evening when almost without warning the end came. She was born at Cayuga, N. Y.:, on July 4th , 1898 and is survived by her mother and father. The funeral v.'ill be held at the family home at 2 o'clock this afternoon and the interment will be made in the Tioga Point cemetery.8 |

Mabee died at l0:30 o'clock Tuesday evening at the home of her parents at 103 Maple street under particularly sad circumstances. The daughter Who was nearly sixteen years of age, was of a gentle loving disposition and was idolized by her parents and was the favorite of her young companions.. A little over six months ago it was found necessary to amputate her left leg a short distance above the knee for a malignant growth which appeared on the bone. About two weeks ago she was taken to the People's hospital where an operation was performed to remove pus from one of her lungs. It was necessary to remove a portion of a rib in order to remove the pus. She seemed to be improving, until Tuesday evening when almost without warning the end came. She was born at Cayuga, N. Y.:, on July 4th , 1898 and is survived by her mother and father. The funeral v.'ill be held at the family home at 2 o'clock this afternoon and the interment will be made in the Tioga Point cemetery.5 |

Anecdote* | In 1923, Philip Levine and fellow medical student Jennie Mabee published an observation contrary to this idea in the Journal of Immunology and warned that transfusion reactions could occur even with universal donors. During a class demonstration, the two noticed that Mabee's serum hemolyzed Levine's blood, despite the fact that she belonged to group I. This research led to the discovery of the Rh factor of blood with an immune response that destroys red blood cells.4 | |
