oObit19 June 1914  On 19 June 1914 at New York City, New York, the obituary of Marion Chilton Mabie read: Miss Marion C. Mabie died of diphtheria today in her home, at No. 5 Edgewood avenue, a victim of the science to which she had dedicated her life. Miss Mabie became infected with the bacteria of diphtheria while pursuing original research work in the laboratories of the Polyclinic Hospital in New York city.
For eight months the young woman had been working to perfect an antitoxin or serum which would make persons; inoculated with it immune to diphtheria. Her efforts had been closely observed by several leading bacteriologist and other scientists.
Miss Mabie had been at the Polyclinic Hospital laboratories almost daily in those eight months and from early in the morning until late at night site had worked over her cultures and tubes. Perhaps, her friends say, it was this overwork that weakened her physical system so that she could not withstand the attack of the germs with which she was constantly experimenting.
About three weeks ago Miss Mabie obtained a tube containing many millions of diphtheria bacteria, suspended in gelatine. At once she began to experiment with this culture. Apparently she soon became infected with the germs in this tube, because two days later she was stricken. Physicians who were called to her home said she was suffering with a virulent type of diphtheria. Because of the peculiarity of the diphtheria bacteria in the last tube obtained by her in the laboratory it became practically certain that germs from that tube entered her system.
Miss Mabie who was only twenty years old, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph R. Mabie. In the New Rochelle High School she had been a leader in her classes and in sports and was a member of the basketball team that won the championship of Westchester county in 1911.
Upon finishing her high school course she went to Wellesley, where she specialized in organic chemistry to fit her for a career as a bacteriologist in original research work. Following two years of that work she entered the laboratories of the Polyclinic Hospital in New York city.7
oObit*19 June 1914  On 19 June 1914 at New York City, New York, the obituary of Marion Chilton Mabie read: Miss Marion C. Mabie, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph R. Mabie, died today [June 18 ] at her home, 5 Edgewood Park, New Rochelle, from heart disease following diphtheria. She was 20 years of age. She intended to devote her life to pathological research, and was a research technician in a New York hospital. It is thought that she became infected with diphtheria in the laboratory.
Miss Mabie was a member of the girl's basketball team of the New Rochelle High School, which won the championship of Westchester County in 1911. She was one of the leaders of the younger set of New Rochelle.6
