Anecdote* | June 1997 | Dr Judson Mabee and his wife Marilyn Die in Plane Crash 3 Jun 1997 Red Lake, Ontario (AP) – an ophthalmologist and his wife from Mitchell, SD, were killed when the light plane in which they were passengers crashed into a northern Ontario lake Sunday afternoon, according to Mitchell Police Chief, Colin Comer. The victims were Dr Judson Mabee, 66, and his wife, Marilyn, 65, Comer said. Mabee owned a Mitchell eye clinic. The aircraft went down in west Red Lake, which is 111 miles north of Dryden, near the Ontario-Manitoba border. The Ontario Coroner's Office and the Canadian Transportation Safely Board have been called in to investigate. The South Dakotans were on a fishing trip when the pontoon plane was trying to land on the water. Authorities said the pilot, Mitchell businessman Ron Randall, survived the crash. Randall was hospitalized in Red Lake, suffering hypothermia, Mitchell authorities said. Ontario provincial police told Mitchell authorities the plane flipped after it touched the water. This crash was seen by people on the shore, who then got out to the site and rescued Randall. 5 Jun 1997 Mitchell – Dr Judson Mabee, 66, and his wife Marilyn Mabee, 65, residents of Mitchell who also had a home in the Black Hills, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Carroll Lake, Ontario, Canada. Services will be Friday at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. 17 Jun 1997 Mitchell – Canadian officials have recovered the plane that crashed on Lake Carroll, Ontario, killing a retired Mitchell eye doctor and his wife. The plane was raised by the insurance company, and officials were able to look at the cockpit controls, said Vic Gurden, regional manager for the federal Transportation Safely Board in Winnipeg, Manitoba. "The landing gear lever in the cockpit was down, and the landing gear wheels were down," Gurden said. In order to make a successful water landing, the wheels needed to be up inside the floats, When the wheels came in contact with the water, it created "Significant drag" causing the plane to cartwheel and flip, he said. Retired Mitchell ophthalmologist Judson Mabee, 66, and his wife, Marilyn, 65, drowned in the crash.5 |
oObit | 6 June 1997 | On 6 June 1997 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the obituary of Marilyn Joan Mabee and Judson Oscar Mabee read: Mitchell – Jud and Marilyn Mabee loved to travel, but they always looked forward to coming home to Mitchell where their heart was. The children of the Mabees say it is tough to sort through the memories their parents gave them over the years. "They died too soon," said Paula Helenurm of San Diego "They loved getting away, but they never wanted to leave Mitchell.... My grandmother still lives in Mitchell, and my mom was a devoted daughter spending a lot of time with her." They supported us in our education, encouraged us to do our own thing, never put any demands on us," she said. Mark Mabee of Yankton, will keep those hunting and fishing trips with his dad as the best memories. Dr Mabee was born Dec 28, 1930 in Mitchell, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He attended the University of South Dakota on a football scholarship. He graduated cum laude in 1951, and then entered the USD School of Medicine. He completed his medical training in 1955 at Northwestern University in Chicago. He married Marilyn George in Huron on June 18, 1955. He completed further surgical training at Denver General Hospital and at Tulane University in New Orleans. He spent two years in the Air Force, and was stationed at Carswell Air Force Base at Fort Worth, Texas. He completed his opthalmological training at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital in New York. The couple returned to Mitchell in 1961, where he began his practice of ophthalmology with his father, Dr Oscar J Mabee. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists and volunteered his time at the Indian Health Service. Marilyn George was born May 29, 1962, in Brainard, Minn. She and her family lived in Igloo during World War II. She graduated from high school in Huron in 1950. She attended Macalester College in Minnesota and graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion with a degree in social work in 1954. She was a social worker in Chicago before her marriage. After the couple's marriage, she worked as a social worker in Denver, New Orleans and in Fort Worth. She was a home maker when they returned to Mitchell. In addition to their daughter and son, survivors include another son, Todd of Summer Lake, Ore; five grandchildren; her mother, Marie George; and his sister, Joan Funk of Denver. Services will be Friday in the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with burial in the Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.7 |

oObit* | 29 January 2009 | On 29 January 2009 at Salt Lake City, Utah, the obituary of Richard Wilson Mabey read: Richard Wilson Mabey died in Bountiful January 26, 2009, having made the most of a life in the confines of an imperfect body. At 71, Richard tenaciously surpassed by decades his projected life expectancy. Born in Salt Lake City on August 31, 1937, to Rendell Noel and Rachel Wilson Mabey, Richard was the second of six children. From the beginning, Richard's life was hemmed in by severe physical and mental disabilities. His parents cared for him at home until he was five, at which time they accepted medical advice and lovingly placed him in professional care. For the past several years, Richard has lived very happily in a Bountiful group home managed by the capable and kind staff of Project Turn Community Services. Though Richard did not talk, he left no doubt about his strong personality. He found ways to express his love for things like ice cream, soda pop, his chair, and his routine. He loved to walk and sit outside. Although his eyesight was limited, he was a keen and curious observer of details close at hand, and nearby activities. Though topping out under 90 pounds, Richard could drag any person anywhere he wanted to go. He patiently abided hugs and handshakes from his family. In 2006, Richard amazed those around him by surviving a fall and broken hip. He then proved the doctors wrong by enduring physical therapy -- and, no doubt, fear and pain he couldn't express -- and returning home to his normal routine. Richard's strength through that ordeal inspired those who loved him. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings, Jane Afton and John Ivins. He is survived by his three brothers, Rendell Noel, Jr. (Dorothy), Ralph Rampton (Sylvia), and Thomas Charles (Shauna). His brother, Ralph, has served as his guardian for many years. Richard is also survived by eight nieces and three nephews, and 19 great-nieces and great-nephews. At the time of his death, Richard lived at 301 East Center Street in Bountiful. The family sends their love to the staff and residents of his home there, who made his life full.1 |
Burial | He was buried at Bountiful City Cemetery, Bountiful, Davis County, Utah.4 |
