oObit | 14 April 1909 | On 14 April 1909 at Evansville, Wisconsin, the obituary of James Dana Mabie read: The death of James D. Mabie, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Levi Sperry, last evening at six o'clock, came as a great shock to his relatives and many friends. His death was due to heart failure and he had been ill only a few hours. He was enjoying his usual good health and walked downtown in the forenoon when he was taken with a severe pain in his side. He summoned a carriage and was taken to his home, where he was tenderly nursed and soon was much easier and apparently better. Shortly before six o'clock his daughter left him and went to the kitchen to prepare his supper and had been gone only a few moments when she heard a moan and found her father dying. Mr. Mabie would have been eighty-two years old had he lived until the fifth of next month. He was born in Schoharie County, New York. In 1849 he was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Sullivan and in 1857 they came West and settled in Wisconsin near Evansville. Eight children came to gladden their home, but its happiness was turned to mourning by the death of the wife and mother in 1878. A few years later he married his second wife, Elizabeth Adair, and soon thereafter went to South Dakota where he lived until five years ago when his wife died and he returned to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Sperry. He was a member of the Methodist Church and his absence will be greatly missed for he was always faithful in attendance at service. He leaves to mourn his loss; six children, Oscar of Janesville, William of Evansville, Dora, Magnolia, Mrs. Levi Sperry, Evansville, Mrs. Nellie Butler, Oakland, California and Mrs. Nettie Wilcox, Janesville. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the M.E. church and will be conducted under the auspices of the Masonic Order."12 |

(Witness) oObit | 14 April 1909 | Oscar A. Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of James Dana Mabie on 14 April 1909 at Evansville, Wisconsin; The death of James D. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the M.E. church and will be conducted under the auspices of the Masonic Order."11 |

(Witness) oObit | 14 April 1909 | George William Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of James Dana Mabie on 14 April 1909 at Evansville, Wisconsin; The death of James D. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the M.E. church and will be conducted under the auspices of the Masonic Order."11 |

oObit | 30 September 1938 | On 30 September 1938 at Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin, the obituary of George William Mabie read: G.W. Mabie, 81, known as William Mabie, one of this city's most prominent Odd Fellows and also one of Evansville's oldest residents, died at 1 a.m. Friday in his home on Franklin street after five days' illness. Mr. Mabie had been gradually failing in health for some time, but had been around the city and his home until a few days ago. Tuesday was his 81st birthday but no celebration was held due to his illness. Mr. Mabie, who had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for 25 years, holding all offices in the local organization in addition to serving as high priest of the camp for the past eight years, was born Sept. 27, 1857, at Footville, in which locality he grew to young manhood. He moved with his parents to the town of Center when 12 years old and attended the old Red Brick school, four and one-half miles east of Evansville, now known as the White Star school. On locating in Evansville at the age of 17, he was employed on the section by the Chicago and North Western railroad for several years, later accepting employment in the tobacco warehouse operated here at the time by Thomas Hudson and Elliott Barnard. On leaving their employ, he worked for nine years in the tobacco warehouse operation by George Rummel, also serving as baggageman at the North Western depot. Mr. Mabie entered the concession business when 19 years old and for 50 years during the summer vacation operated a lunch stand at state and county fairs and homecoming celebrations. He was one of the first to follow this line of business and when at first at the business a bakery proprietor told him he was crazy when he placed an order for 60 dozen buns. In addition to being a prominent Odd Fellow, Mr. Mabie was a charter member of the local Rebekah lodge and a member of the Methodist church. He married Frances Louise Smith in December, 1875, and seven children were born to them. Claude, the oldest son, died in infancy, and Frances, a daughter, died when 16. Mrs. Mabie died April 7, 1896. Thirty-seven years ago Mr. Mabie married Mrs. Vira Taplin. Survivors are: His widow; three daughters, Mrs. Elmer Taylor, Janesville, Mrs. Charles Peters, Madison, and Mrs. George Noyes, Evansville; two sons, George Mabie, Evansville, and Paul Mabie, St. Louis, Mo; 19 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Methodist church, the Rev. Arthur Edwards, pastor, officiating. The Rebekah lodge will attend in a body and I.O.O.F. burial services will be held at the grave in Maple Hill cemetery. The body is at the Allen funeral home where friends may call.15 |

Barnard of this city, James N., of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Elizabeth Mabee of Janesville, these with their families, friends, and neighbors sorrow, but not for those without hope. Mr. Osborne was converted in 1840 and joined the Methodist church. At a later date he transferred his membership to Evansville, thus for over sixty years he was identified with the church of God. For many years, he held the office of class leader, and steward and was highly esteemed for his works sake. In his later years on account of the infirmities of age he was not as active, but his heart was in the work for in the most serious hours of his illness he frequently referred to the good old days of his active christian life. The way brightened as death approached and he was ready to go. Funeral services were held from the late residence Tuesday afternoon, Rev. James Churm officiating. Miss Fanny Powles sang two beautiful solos.8 |
