Mabie was promoted to Master Sergeant on January 1, 1944 while overseas based at Sciacca, Sicily, Italy with the 15th Troop Carrier Squadron - he was later bestowed the Bronze Star for promoting and establishing significant administrative and work performance efficiencies on duty. He was an Engineering Flight Chief - all of the flying crew chiefs reported to him. He never flew in combat, though probably was aboard for many C-47 flight tests, his job was to make certain every C-47 aircraft in the Squadron was at peak operating efficiency.
