Residence*between 1987 and 2000 Betty Lee Murphy and John Couchman Mabee lived between 1987 and 2000 at San Diego, California.
(Witness) oObit Betty Lee Murphy was mentioned in the obituary of John Couchman Mabee; John and Betty Mabee founded Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona, Cal., possibly the most successful and formidable breeding operations in California. John Mabee died on April 24, 2002, at age 80, after complications from a stroke suffered a week earlier. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 60 years, a son, Larry, and three grandchildren.
Betty, with Larry's assistance, has carried on the operation of Golden Eagle Farm ... Golden Eagle has scaled back its involvement since John's death, and in 2007, it was announced that they would sell the flagship farm in Ramona and disperse approximately 250 horses over the course of a year. They will retain a handful of broodmares and move to a smaller farm in Rancho Santa Fe by 2009
The Mabees moved to California in 1941 from Iowa and built a corner grocery store in San Diego into the Big Bear supermarket chain. From the profits of Big Bear, which was sold in 1991, Golden Eagle Farm was born. In 1984 Mabee founded the Golden Eagle Insurance, a workers' compensation carrier in California. The company was sold in 1997 after a battle with California insurance regulators.6
Death*15 February 2010 Betty Lee Murphy died on 15 February 2010 at Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego County, California, at age 88.7
oObit*16 February 2010  On 16 February 2010 at Los Angeles, California, the obituary of Betty Lee Murphy read: Betty L. Mabee, a dedicated philanthropist who with her husband, John, built one of California's leading thoroughbred breeding farms in the hills of Ramona, Calif., died Monday. She was 88.
Mabee died at her Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., home near San Diego after an extended illness, announced her only child, Larry.
Between 1990 and 2001, the Mabees were consistently named California's leading breeders. In the 1990s, they won three Eclipse Awards as the outstanding thoroughbred breeder in North America.
The Mabees were a true team, said Joe Harper, president of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.
"For many years, they had the most successful breeding operation in the state. They also were both instrumental in Del Mar racetrack being... one of the most successful tracks in the country," he said.
After her husband died at 80 in 2002, Mabee and her son continued to run Golden Eagle Farm, a 568-acre spread that the family established in 1972.
She also moved into the Del Mar boardroom in 2002, becoming only the second woman in the track's history to hold such a post.
Her favorite racehorse was Best Pal, who was bred at her farm and won more than $5.6 million, including the inaugural running of the $1-million Pacific Classic at Del Mar in 1991.
Born in Unionville, Mo., in 1921, Mabee grew up on an Iowa farm, as did her future husband. High school sweethearts, they married in 1941.
After moving to San Diego in 1943, the couple invested $2,000 in a mom-and-pop grocery store that grew into the Big Bear supermarket chain. They sold it in the early 1990s.
"When you have a store about the size of a family room, and there are only two people, you are it," Mabee told The San Diego Union-Tribune in 1991. "All of our farm training didn't hurt.... We were used to working from dawn until dark."
From 1984 to 1997, the Mabees also owned the Golden Eagle Insurance Co., which had more than 1,300 employees.
Dedicated to community projects, she started a secondhand thrift shop in Chula Vista to support San Diego's Aseltine School for children with learning disabilities. She also founded a number of auxiliaries and volunteered widely.
In 1957, her interest in racing had been sparked by the purchase of two yearling thoroughbreds, the Coal Baron and War Missile.
Racing "has been such a wonderful world," Mabee said in 2002. "I couldn't imagine being without it."
In addition to her son, she is survived by three grandchildren.3

(Witness) oObit1902 Jane Ann Denike was mentioned in the obituary of William H. Mabie in 1902; William Mabie (8 Apr 1839-14 Aug 1901)
William Mabie, of Peekskill, N. Y., joined the Society, June 10, 1897, and died August 14, 1901. He was the son of Hiram and Mary Smith Mabie, and was born at Shrub Oak, Westchester County, New York, April 8, 1839. His education was acquired at the Shrub Oak School and the Peekskill Military Academy.
Mr. Mabie when he came to Peekskill, a lad of ten years, resided with his parents on the corner of South Division and Elizabeth streets. Later, when married, he lived in Second Street. On January 2, 1880, he purchased from the Peekskill Savings Bank the homestead on Elm and Fremont streets, where he spent the last years of his busy and eventful life.
In 1868, with Stephen D. Horton, he bought the Fire-brick Works on Water Street, and the firm of Horton & Mabie became known all over this country in stove circles. He retired from this firm in September, 1898. His last business venture was in the real estate and insurance business.
He was also from time to time connected with other business enterprises as side issues, and was, in January, 1887, appointed by the Supreme Court as receiver for the firm of Montross & Lent, which was dissolved at that time. Mr. Mabie handled the receivership with consummate skill.
In politics Mr. Mabie was an unswerving Democrat, as were his ancestors before him. Twenty years ago he was a power in the Democratic ranks of northern Westchester County and prominent in its councils. He was for many years a member of the Democratic village and town committees, ofttimes chairman of one or both; a delegate to village, town, county, assembly, senatorial, district, and other conventions over and over again. In a Democratic gathering the pleasant face and the warm, extended hand of William Mabie was always seen and felt.
He was elected Trustee of the Village of Peekskill, and Treasurer; Supervisor for four terms of the Town of Cortlandt; Superintendent of the Poor for the County of Westchester, and Water Commissioner; and in all these offices served with zeal and fidelity.
He was chosen a Trustee of the Peeskkill Military Academy in January, 1881, and was reelected in 1884, 1887, and 1890. His last term expired in January, 1893, and he declined a reelection.
He was elected a Trustee of the Peekskill Savings Bank, May 14, 1875, and served with fidelity until August 21, 1893, eighteen years, when he resigned.
He joined the Second Presbyterian Church, February 20, 1871, and took his letter therefrom March 21, 1882.
He became a member of the First Presbyterian Church by letter, May 12, 1882, and was always active in its work, attentive upon its worship, and devoted to the cause of Christianity. He was a trustee of the church ten years, from 1882 until 1892. He was elected an elder, April 28, 1889, and held that office at the time of his death.
Mr. Mabie married Anne Denike, daughter of Jacob and Alletta Denike, April 27, 1864, who survives him. The surviving children are three: Dr. Austin D. Mabie, of New York; Louis Ferris Mabie, of Peekskill; and Miss Jennie Louise Mabie, who lives at home with her mother.
Mr. Mabie was a gentleman of the old school, unostentatious, retiring, peaceful, and law-abiding; of unsullied honor, sterling integrity, and most correct habits; against his character naught could be said. He was a man of large mould and kindly nature. He had won successes in life, and although reverses came in later years, his heart was enlarged in kindliness towards others, and stimulated others to well-doing. He had great courage and forcefulness, and had the strong, sturdy characteristics of his race. And yet "His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, 'This was a man.'"

(Witness) oObit1902 Louis Ferris Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of William H.
