Anecdote | Harry was involved in a buffalo roundup. In an effort to perpetuate and save the bison, the Canadian government authorized a round up of the animals, sending them to Wainwright, Alberta Canada to be branded before they were transported to the Northwest Territory. Harry Mabey handled the irons and tells this story.. "The riders had to run in about 300 head at dawn and we were to go, putting the buffs through the squeeze as fast as I could take them. I had to work the branding irons down on my knees and got some kicks and burns. This one day a lady came with an injunction to stop the branding, but I kept taking them as fast as I could. She called me a heartless brute, among other things. We got 160 head through that day and 61 the next. Then there was nothing to do but take the buffalo back to the pasture pen and hold them until we corralled them for entrainment. We had finished up the first quota of branding; feeling very happy, ready to hit back to camp some 12 miles away. (I might add here that the riders had been in the saddle since six o'clock. And then from the top of the corral fence where he had been comfortably watching the proceedings, up spoke one of the officials. 'You boys quitting? It's only 3 o'clock and you should be docked for the rest of the afternoon." Wowie, the fact that he was an Easterner saved his life that day and the riders got their pay." When the big day for the entrainment arrived, with spectators from all over the province decorating the corral fences and the top of the stock car, the riders corralled the shippers at dawn, and despite balky buffs in the chute all went smoothly and by 4 p.m. 200 buffalo were on wheels and to their northern home."1 | |
