Anecdote*5 June 1917 Walter Amos Mabey of Sandy, Utah, born 10 Aug 1893 in South Jordan, Utah, registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 at Salt Lake County, Utah. He was farming for himself at South Jordan. He was single, white, of medium height and build, with gray eyes and brown hair.2
MilService*4 October 1918 Walter Amos Mabey left the family farm in South Jordan and enlisted in the Army in Salt Lake City on Oct. 1, 1917. He was 23 years old. He didn't have to go. His mother was a widow and Walt was her main means of support. But he went. "This is my country, too," he wrote.
On his way to sign up, Walter stopped off at the (LDS Church) patriarch's house for a blessing. Walter figured he needed one. He put the blessing, promising him safety if he kept the faith, in his front shirt pocket and left it there.
The Army put him on a train. He arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey, on Dec. 13 and set sail for France, landing on Dec. 29, 1917. For eight months he went through training and built armaments, far from any bullets. But that changed in August when he was sent with the 18th Infantry to where the Meuse River flows beneath the Argonne Forest in northeastern France.
There the farm boy from Utah became part of the Meuse-Argonne campaign, still the largest offensive in U.S. military history, involving 1.2 million American soldiers. Some 26,277 of them gave their lives, while tens of thousands more were wounded.. One of those being Pvt. Mabey.
He suffered a head wound, no doubt from shrapnel, and lay in a dugout "for who knows how long" before he was carried off to hospital. The day he was hit was Oct. 4, 1918. One month and one week later the war ended.
Walter returned to South Jordan with a Purple Heart the next summer. At the homecoming party his mother threw for him, he met an elementary schoolteacher named Ethel, who became his wife.6

oObit*19 April 2022  On 19 April 2022 at Salt Lake City, Utah, the obituary of John Hicken Mabey Sr. read: John Hicken (JH) Mabey peacefully passed away on Easter weekend at home on April 16, 2022, next door to the homes where he grew up in South Jordan, Utah. JH dedicated his life to Jesus Christ and His gospel. His life was a blessing to all as he shared his wit, love, and testimony. JH enjoyed gardening vegetables and flowers, a competitive game of Rook, any BYU sporting event, being with family, and sharing ice cream.
JH was born June 23, 1931, to Walter Amos and Ethel Ione Hicken Mabey. He grew up on his father's farm where he learned to work, "one of the great blessings given me by my father." JH passed those same blessings on to his children. During high school he especially enjoyed Seminary. JH attended the University of Utah while he prepared to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His first call was canceled due to the Korean War. Then because of a heart condition he was declared ineligible for both military and mission service. After months of prayer and determination he was eventually called to the Northern California Mission.
Near the end of his mission, he met Sister Velma Pocock in the mission office. He later appeared on her front porch unannounced the day she just happened to return to her Tooele home. JH and Velma were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, June 22, 1955. Together they raised their family of six children. While JH was busy with his career and church service, Velma was behind the scenes running a busy household and tirelessly supporting JH in his many callings. They served together in the England Birmingham Mission in 1994-96. During his last years JH expressed many times his deep gratitude for Velma's love and devotion.
JH received a BS in Secondary Instruction from Brigham Young University and after began his career as a Seminary and Institute Instructor in the Church Education System. He was a seminary teacher between 1956 and 1985, earning a master's degree in 1963 from BYU in religious education. For his last eight years of teaching he lovingly taught and served alongside his brothers and sisters at the Utah State Prison Institute until 1993. Brother Mabey was a master teacher of the gospel who touched many lives, not only in the mission field, seminary, and institute, but with everyone he met, including his years of church service as Bishop of the South Jordan 1st Ward, 1965-69; South Jordan Stake Presidency, 1969-78; Stake Patriarch, 1978-96; Sealer at the Jordan River Temple, 1982-2018; Sunday School teacher and ministering brother.
JH is survived by his wife Velma; six children, John Jr. (Cristine), Salt Lake City; Deanna M. Allred (Jim), West Jordan; Stewart D. (Christy), Buhl, Idaho; Todd M. (Laura), Torrance, California; Lee W. (Marlene), Ririe, Idaho; Jeanette M. Hales (Kelly), Highland; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen M. Burgon; brother, Sherman W. Mabey; sisters Janice M. Miner and Arlene Mabey.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the South Jordan River Ridge Stake Center, 10190 South 1000 West, South Jordan, Utah.
