Jesse M. Garner

M, #16293, b. 11 October 1870, d. 17 June 1941
Birth*11 October 1870 Jesse M. Garner was born on 11 October 1870 at Wilkes County, North Carolina, son of Isaac and Adelaide Caudle Garner.1
Marriage*22 February 1899 He married Rosie L Maybee, daughter of William Edgar Maybee and Rachel Mapes, on 22 February 1899 at Valentine, Cherry County, Nebraska.2
Anecdote*1909 Among the younger "old settlers" of western Nebraska we mention the name of Jesse W. Garner, who resides on his valuable estate situated in section 3, township 33, range 35, of, Cherry county.
Mr. Garner was born in Wilkes county, North Carolina, October 11, 1870. His father, Isaac Garner, was a farmer and homesteader in Cherry county, coming here in 1892 from North Carolina, where he was reared and served in the southern army under impressment, his sympathies being with the north. Our subject's mother was Miss Adelaide Caudle, of old southern blood, arid he was the second member in her family of four children. When he was seven years of age the family came to Dodge county as pioneers, and there he was reared and educated, attending the country schools. When twenty years old he moved to Cherry county, and was here throughout the Indian troubles of 1890-91, witnessing many exciting incidents of that time. He located on a homestead west of Cody, and also took up a tree claim near there, batching it for six years and leading a regular pioneer existence. His first buildings were all of sod, and he started in to build up his farm, on which he proved up, then left the place and moved to his present farm in 1902, located on the Niobrara river. Here he has established a fine estate, and has improved the place with good buildings, fences and up-to-date machinery. He has one hundred and twenty acres cultivated, and altogether operates eight hun [page 483] dred and eighty acres of land, engaging in ranching and stock raising. Together with his brother he owns upwards of two thousand acres of valuable farm and ranch lands.
Mr. Garner was married in 1896 to Miss Rosa Maybee, daughter of William and Rachel Maybee, pioneer homesteaders in Cherry county. Mr. and Mrs. Garner are the parents of three children, namely: Lee, Roxy and Rose. The family is highly esteemed in their home community, and are popular and well liked by all who know them.
Mr. Garner is a Republican, active in local political circles, and lends his influence for the principles of that party. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.3
Census*1920 Jesse M. Garner and Rosie L Maybee appeared on the census of 1920 at Eli, Cherry County, Nebraska.

Anecdote*March 1906 We came to the Carbon homestead in March, 1906, by democrat and wagon, and lived in a granary until a "decent" house was built. Brother Earl rode the five miles to Gamble School on his buckskin cayuse, "Tip". Then brother Clair rode the same "pet", and he and I drove home on a home-made box sled in the winter, and a buggy in the summer. Earl graduated to a beautiful thoroughbred, "Dixie". They won their share of races at local spots days. In 1915 the farm was sold to the D.L. Halsteads from Ontario. Leo and Ethel Halstead still live there, after acquiring much more of the surrounding lands. the Mabees moved into Carbon. My Dad and Earl kept their horses on some land south of town. At one time they had about sixty head of horses. We lived across the creek in the Craig house, past the R.C.M.P. and next door to Tom Bishops. The creek flooded in the spring thaw and washed the bridge out, so my Dad and Earl built the swinging foot bridge across the town. ....
