Clara was the daughter of George's half sister Lydia Stuart, and when she was eighteen Uncle George, who was a professor at a university in Ottawa, had her come live with them so she could take a secretarial course. She got a job in the parliament buildings and after a time became the private secretary to Walter Turnbull. He had been in excellent health and was preparing to return to Ottawa from his summer home at Marshall's Bay. He was in his 78th year.
Born in Charlotteville in Norfolk County, Ontario, the son of the late George Mabee and his wife, Pamela Elliott, he received his early education in that district, and later graduated from the University of Toronto with a double degree in Classical and Modern languages. He entered the teaching profession which he followed until his retirement from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in 1936, except for a brief interlude as a young man in Mexico and the Southern States.
The greatest part of his teaching life was spent in the High Schools of Port Hope, Arnprior and Ottawa. He came to Lisgar as an assistant Classical Master in 1910, and on the death of the late William Hardie, in 1920, he was appointed head of that department, a position which he filled with distinction until his retirement ten years ago.
He was an inspiring teacher, who held the full confidence and friendship of his classes. Until stricken with a severe illness he was an enthusiastic skier, golfer and curler, being a member of the Rivermead Golf Club and the Rideau Curling Club.
An Anglican by faith, Mr Mabee for many years served as a reader at the Church of St Alban the Martyr.
