oObit*6 January 1909  On 6 January 1909 at Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada, the obituary of James David Crockett read: The Late Capt. James Crockett. On Tuesday evening last week, Mr. James Crockett died at his residence on Wolvin Street, Port Rowan, after an illness of 2 months. He was born on the 17th of April, 1820, in Ireland. He left his home at the age of 11 years and went to sea. He was a sailor for a number of years on fresh and salt waters. He left the sailing business and was in the fishery for a number of years. He has been around this region for 63 years. 58 years Christmas, he married Miss Mabee, daughter of Pellam Mabee, an old pioneer of Turkey Point. He was a resident of Port Rowan for 25 years, and was known and respected by all. Besides his widow, he leaves five sons, Joseph, Cruso and Harry, at Port Rowan, and two in Buffalo, Samuel and William, and one daughter, Mrs. John Sherk, of Simcoe; one daughter, Emma, Mrs. Paterson, and one son, James, predeceased him. He had 22 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, a host of friends also deeply regret his departure, especially the older men of the community, who have regarded him as their companion and friend -- one of the chief repositories of the memories and traditions of the community.6 
Burial* He and Elizabeth Ann Mabee were buried at Bayview Cemetery, Port Rowan, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.7

(Witness) oObit14 April 1876 He was mentioned in the obituary of Lorenzo D. Maybee on 14 April 1876 at Allegany County, New York; Mr. Lorenzo Maybee, who resides on the Vandermark, in the town of Scio, was almost instantly killed on Monday last. It appears that he had hitched his oxen to a wagon which was loaded with hay, and in going between them to fasten the binder to the load, the oxen became frightened and started on a run. Mr. Maybee being felled to the ground, one of the wheels passing over him and breaking the temporal bone of the skull. He was taken up in an insensible condition, and carried to his residence, where he remained in a comatose state for about two hours, when he died. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss.2

Note*  Sarah's father was "Rev. George Ryerse, second son of Colonel Samuel, was a Baptist preacher. He married Elizabeth Vail and settled at Port Ryerse. Many of the old people of Windham and other back townships will remember with pleasure the old house on the hill where they used to go for cherry and other fruit supplies. Elder Ryerse subsequently married Nancy Shaw for his second wife. He had five sons--William, James, Francis, Lewis and George; and six daughters--Maria, Sarah, Amelia, Ida, Bessie and Helen. William married a daughter of the late Col. Isaac Gilbert and settled in Port Ryerse. James married Sarah Ann, daughter of Emmanuel Winter, and settled near Port Ryerse. Francis married Elizabeth Potts, of Woodhouse, and settled near Port Ryerse. Lewis married Kate Kelly and settled at Point St. Ignace, Mich. George married Caroline Lee, granddaughter of the late John Chadwick, of Charlotteville, and settled on the old homestead. Maria married John Austin, the carriage builder, and settled in Simcoe. Sarah married Charles Mabee and settled in Delhi. Amelia married a dentist named Barrett and settled in Buffalo. Ida married Captain Wesley Hazen. Bessie married in Saginaw, and Helen married J. Bottomly and settled in Lynedoch."2
