Anecdote | 1897 | Joseph Kline, a well-known resident of Pawling, Dutchess county, engaged in the livery business, has also been for some time in the employ of the United States Government as mail clerk on the Harlem railroad. He learned the carriage maker's trade in early life, but did not follow it long as a business. He and his wife, formerly Miss Carrie Mabie, have three children: Anna A., Mary E. and Agnes J., who are all at home. Mrs. Kline was born and reared in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is a descendant of early settlers in Patterson, Putnam county, where her grandfather, Samuel Mabie, first saw the light. His education was acquired in the common schools there, and he engaged in farming in early manhood. He was united in matrimony with Miss Polly Bolts, and had six children, of whom Hiram, Mrs. Kline's father, was the eldest. William married Laura Dykeman; Phoebe married Nathan Dykeman; Ruth was the wife of James Dykeman; Adaline married J.B. Swan; and Sarah died at an early age. Hiram Mabie was born in 1823, in Towners, Putnam county, and after obtaining a common-school education there followed agricultural pursuits. He married Miss Julia Pagsley, daughter of Benjamin Pagsley, a leading butcher of Patterson, and his wife, Polly Crosby. Mrs. Kline was the fourth in a family of five children. Of the others, (1) Mary E. has never married. (2) Washington was educated in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is now engaged in farming. He married Miss Jennie Fowler and had three children—Estelle, Gertrude and Clarence. (3) Estelle was born and reared in the town of Dover, and she is now the wife of John Haynes, an agriculturist of the town of Pawling. They have two children—Fred and Ruth. (5) Florence, Mrs. Kline's youngest sister, married John Merrick, a resident of Towners, and has no children.14 |

(Witness) oObit | 31 October 1884 | Mortimer Monroe Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of Moses T. Mabie on 31 October 1884 at Buffalo, Erie County, New York; The inevitable call of the death angel which sooner or later desolates every household, came to another prominent business man of this city yesterday, and Moses T. Mabie, the well known Main street boot and shoe dealer, passed into the unknown world beyond the portals of the tomb. Mr. Mabie was born in Putnam county, this state, September 4, 1828, making his age at the time of his demise only fifty-six. During the exciting days of 1849 be joined the Argonaut army who sought their fortunes amid the golden sands of the Pacific slope. After two years be turned his steps eastward once more, and in 1851 established himself in the boot and shoe business in Buffalo. He was a man of a quiet, conservative temperament, kind hearted, industrious, and highly respected by all with whom he was brought in contact through his social or business relations. So disinclined to change was he that for a quarter of a century he carried on his vocation at one stand. About four weeks ago he was stricken down by a disease which finally took the form of impoverishment of the blood, and be steadily declined until yesterday when he breathed his last, at his late residence. 909 East Eagle. His untimely death is mourned by a widow and six children. Mortimer M., Webster B. and Anna E. Mabie. Mrs. R. W. Graves, Mrs Frederick Howard and Mrs. James L. Leavitt.9 |
