(Witness) Anecdote | March 1906 | We came to the Carbon homestead in March, 1906, by democrat and wagon, and lived in a granary until a "decent" house was built. Brother Earl rode the five miles to Gamble School on his buckskin cayuse, "Tip". Then brother Clair rode the same "pet", and he and I drove home on a home-made box sled in the winter, and a buggy in the summer. Earl graduated to a beautiful thoroughbred, "Dixie". They won their share of races at local spots days. In 1915 the farm was sold to the D.L. Halsteads from Ontario. Leo and Ethel Halstead still live there, after acquiring much more of the surrounding lands. the Mabees moved into Carbon. My Dad and Earl kept their horses on some land south of town. At one time they had about sixty head of horses. We lived across the creek in the Craig house, past the R.C.M.P. and next door to Tom Bishops. Again in 1879, the fourth year of his service, the congregation celebrated the extinction of the church's debt. Surviving the venerable clergyman are the widow, Mrs Emma Mabie, and four daughters, Dr Catherine Mabie, now in the African Congo; Mrs Edith Shell, Colton, Calif; Mrs P. H. Reed, Colton, Calif, and Mrs W. J. Fitzpatrick of Eureka, Calif. Rev. Mr. Mabie was buried in Colton.9 |

Anecdote* | 1897 | Joseph Kline, a well-known resident of Pawling, Dutchess county, engaged in the livery business, has also been for some time in the employ of the United States Government as mail clerk on the Harlem railroad. He learned the carriage maker's trade in early life, but did not follow it long as a business. He and his wife, formerly Miss Carrie Mabie, have three children: Anna A., Mary E. and Agnes J., who are all at home. Mrs. Kline was born and reared in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is a descendant of early settlers in Patterson, Putnam county, where her grandfather, Samuel Mabie, first saw the light. His education was acquired in the common schools there, and he engaged in farming in early manhood. He was united in matrimony with Miss Polly Bolts, and had six children, of whom Hiram, Mrs. Kline's father, was the eldest. William married Laura Dykeman; Phoebe married Nathan Dykeman; Ruth was the wife of James Dykeman; Adaline married J.B. Swan; and Sarah died at an early age. Hiram Mabie was born in 1823, in Towners, Putnam county, and after obtaining a common-school education there followed agricultural pursuits. He married Miss Julia Pagsley, daughter of Benjamin Pagsley, a leading butcher of Patterson, and his wife, Polly Crosby. Mrs. Kline was the fourth in a family of five children. Of the others, (1) Mary E. has never married. (2) Washington was educated in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is now engaged in farming. He married Miss Jennie Fowler and had three children—Estelle, Gertrude and Clarence. (3) Estelle was born and reared in the town of Dover, and she is now the wife of John Haynes, an agriculturist of the town of Pawling. They have two children—Fred and Ruth. (5) Florence, Mrs. Kline's youngest sister, married John Merrick, a resident of Towners, and has no children.9 |

(Witness) oObit | 27 July 1918 | Carrie Mary Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of Estella Jennings Mabie on 27 July 1918 at Carmel, New York; Estelle Mabie, wife of John Haynes died very suddenly at her home, near Pawling, on Friday night, July 19, 1918. She had not been in good health or some time, but was able to be about and attend to household duties. That morning she talked .over the telephone with, her sister, Mrs John C. Merrick of Townwrs, prepared dinner as usual, and was about in the early afternoon. Later in the afternoon she complained of not feeling as well and about six o'clock went to bed. Shortly afterward she experienced a sever pain in her head, and soon after passed away, a stroke of apoplexy causing her death. Mrs. Haynes was a daughter of, the late Hiram and Julia Pugsloy Mabie and was sixty-one years old. She is survived by her husband and one son, Frederick Haynes, who lives with his parents; also by three sisters and a brother: Mary Eliza Mabie, of Pawling; Florence, wife of John C. Merrick, of Towner's; Carrie, wife of Joseph Kline, of Brooklyn, and Washington P. Mabie, of Pawling. She was a woman greatly beloved by her relatives and friends alike, and her death brings mourning and deep regret to a large circle, not only of family connections but also in the community where her upright, useful life has been spent. There was a very large attendance at the funeral, which was held at her late home on Monday at 2 p. m. Rev. E. Corneillo, pastor of tho M. E. Church, Pawling, officiated. The floral remembrances were many and very beautiful. The burial was in tho family plot in Pawling Cemetery.11 |

Mrs. Haynes was a daughter of, the late Hiram and Julia Pugsloy Mabie and was sixty-one years old. She is survived by her husband and one son, Frederick Haynes, who lives with his parents; also by three sisters and a brother: Mary Eliza Mabie, of Pawling; Florence, wife of John C. Merrick, of Towner's; Carrie, wife of Joseph Kline, of Brooklyn, and Washington P. Mabie, of Pawling. She was a woman greatly beloved by her relatives and friends alike, and her death brings mourning and deep regret to a large circle, not only of family connections but also in the community where her upright, useful life has been spent. There was a very large attendance at the funeral, which was held at her late home on Monday at 2 p. m. Rev. E. Corneillo, pastor of tho M. E. Church, Pawling, officiated. The floral remembrances were many and very beautiful. The burial was in tho family plot in Pawling Cemetery.7 |

(Witness) Anecdote | 1897 | Joseph Kline, a well-known resident of Pawling, Dutchess county, engaged in the livery business, has also been for some time in the employ of the United States Government as mail clerk on the Harlem railroad. He learned the carriage maker's trade in early life, but did not follow it long as a business. He and his wife, formerly Miss Carrie Mabie, have three children: Anna A., Mary E. and Agnes J., who are all at home. Mrs. Kline was born and reared in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is a descendant of early settlers in Patterson, Putnam county, where her grandfather, Samuel Mabie, first saw the light. His education was acquired in the common schools there, and he engaged in farming in early manhood. He was united in matrimony with Miss Polly Bolts, and had six children, of whom Hiram, Mrs. Kline's father, was the eldest. William married Laura Dykeman; Phoebe married Nathan Dykeman; Ruth was the wife of James Dykeman; Adaline married J.B. Swan; and Sarah died at an early age. Hiram Mabie was born in 1823, in Towners, Putnam county, and after obtaining a common-school education there followed agricultural pursuits. He married Miss Julia Pagsley, daughter of Benjamin Pagsley, a leading butcher of Patterson, and his wife, Polly Crosby. Mrs. Kline was the fourth in a family of five children. Of the others, (1) Mary E. has never married. (2) Washington was educated in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is now engaged in farming. He married Miss Jennie Fowler and had three children—Estelle, Gertrude and Clarence. (3) Estelle was born and reared in the town of Dover, and she is now the wife of John Haynes, an agriculturist of the town of Pawling. They have two children—Fred and Ruth. (Witness) oObit | 27 July 1918 | Mary Eliza Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of Estella Jennings Mabie on 27 July 1918 at Carmel, New York; Estelle Mabie, wife of John Haynes died very suddenly at her home, near Pawling, on Friday night, July 19, 1918. She had not been in good health or some time, but was able to be about and attend to household duties. That morning she talked .over the telephone with, her sister, Mrs John C. Merrick of Townwrs, prepared dinner as usual, and was about in the early afternoon. Later in the afternoon she complained of not feeling as well and about six o'clock went to bed. Shortly afterward she experienced a sever pain in her head, and soon after passed away, a stroke of apoplexy causing her death. Mrs. Haynes was a daughter of, the late Hiram and Julia Pugsloy Mabie and was sixty-one years old. She is survived by her husband and one son, Frederick Haynes, who lives with his parents; also by three sisters and a brother: Mary Eliza Mabie, of Pawling; Florence, wife of John C. Merrick, of Towner's; Carrie, wife of Joseph Kline, of Brooklyn, and Washington P. Mabie, of Pawling. She was a woman greatly beloved by her relatives and friends alike, and her death brings mourning and deep regret to a large circle, not only of family connections but also in the community where her upright, useful life has been spent. There was a very large attendance at the funeral, which was held at her late home on Monday at 2 p. m. Rev. E. Corneillo, pastor of tho M. E. Church, Pawling, officiated. The floral remembrances were many and very beautiful. The burial was in tho family plot in Pawling Cemetery.13 |

Hughson, of Carmel, died Friday, July 22, 1938, at the Highland Hospital in Beacon. She was stricken suddenly with a heart ailment and lived only four days. She was born at the historic family homestead at Tilly Foster, the daughter of the late Elijah F. and Susan Hall Fowler, and was seventy-five years old. . . . On January 26, 1887, she married Washington P. Mabie and for forty two years they resided at Pawling. Nine years ago they moved to Fishkill village where they have since resided. Mrs. Mabie was a member of the Fishkill Methodist church and in her younger days she attended Drew seminary in Carmel. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. William H. Baker, of Southeast, and Mrs. Harry J. Muntz, of Bellmore, L. I; one son, Clarence, of Chappaqua; and one sister, Mrs. Fannie B. Hughson, of Carmel. Eleven grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at her late home at Fishkill and burial.18 |

(Witness) Anecdote | 1897 | Joseph Kline, a well-known resident of Pawling, Dutchess county, engaged in the livery business, has also been for some time in the employ of the United States Government as mail clerk on the Harlem railroad. He learned the carriage maker's trade in early life, but did not follow it long as a business. He and his wife, formerly Miss Carrie Mabie, have three children: Anna A., Mary E. and Agnes J., who are all at home. Mrs. Kline was born and reared in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is a descendant of early settlers in Patterson, Putnam county, where her grandfather, Samuel Mabie, first saw the light. His education was acquired in the common schools there, and he engaged in farming in early manhood. He was united in matrimony with Miss Polly Bolts, and had six children, of whom Hiram, Mrs. Kline's father, was the eldest. William married Laura Dykeman; Phoebe married Nathan Dykeman; Ruth was the wife of James Dykeman; Adaline married J.B. Swan; and Sarah died at an early age. Hiram Mabie was born in 1823, in Towners, Putnam county, and after obtaining a common-school education there followed agricultural pursuits. He married Miss Julia Pagsley, daughter of Benjamin Pagsley, a leading butcher of Patterson, and his wife, Polly Crosby. Mrs. Kline was the fourth in a family of five children. Of the others, (1) Mary E. has never married. (2) Washington was educated in the town of Dover, Dutchess county, and is now engaged in farming. He married Miss Jennie Fowler and had three children—Estelle, Gertrude and Clarence. (3) Estelle was born and reared in the town of Dover, and she is now the wife of John Haynes, an agriculturist of the town of Pawling. They have two children—Fred and Ruth. (5) Florence, Mrs. Kline's youngest sister, married John Merrick, a resident of Towners, and has no children.6 |

Hughson, of Carmel, died Friday, July 22, 1938, at the Highland Hospital in Beacon. She was stricken suddenly with a heart ailment and lived only four days. She was born at the historic family homestead at Tilly Foster, the daughter of the late Elijah F. and Susan Hall Fowler, and was seventy-five years old. . . . On January 26, 1887, she married Washington P. Mabie and for forty two years they resided at Pawling. Nine years ago they moved to Fishkill village where they have since resided. Mrs. Mabie was a member of the Fishkill Methodist church and in her younger days she attended Drew seminary in Carmel. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. William H. Baker, of Southeast, and Mrs. Harry J. Muntz, of Bellmore, L. I; one son, Clarence, of Chappaqua; and one sister, Mrs. Fannie B. Hughson, of Carmel. Eleven grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at her late home at Fishkill and burial.11 |

Albert Rider will officiate, and burial will be in Salem cemetery at Wilnot. Friends may call at the Troxel funeral home in North Webster until noon Saturday, at which time the body will be taken to the church.4 |
