Her husband meantime carried on a prosperous mercantile business. In her maiden days Mrs. Bates was a member and zealous worker in the Associate Reformed Church which stood on the lot now occupied by the Y. M. C. A. imposing block. She transferred her church membership on moving to Williamsport to the Second Presbyterian Church of that city, and made herself useful in all its branches of Christian work. The Sun say his condition was serious from the first, and his advanced age was somewhat against his recovery. He was conscious to within two hours of his death.. A sketch of his lifej follows:
H« was born at Sharon, Ct. Feb. 3 , 1827. At about the age of six years he moved with his parents to Yates county, New York, and at the age of 16 he entered a mercantile house in the town of Geneva, New York, where he remained until August, 1858, when he came to Williamsport and engaged in the grocery and feed business. From 1858 to 1886 he was in business at the same stand, 48 East Third Street, where his son, Edward M. Bates is now his successor. At that time he retired to private life.
Mr. Bates never entered public or political life, he was not a lodge man, but for forty years was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, and was a constant attendant at services.

Father*Thomas Nathan Hatcher1 b. 9 Sep 1828, d. 2 Mar 1923
Mother*Mary Ann Fifield1 b. 9 Nov 1834, d. 25 Nov 1886
Anecdote* Family remembrances indicate that Austin ran away from home after his father remarried because he didn't get along with his stepmother. Reportedly, he was taken in by a Preacher's family. No hard documentation has been found for him until his marriage to Irena in 1870. They lived for an extended period in Bates County, Missouri, prior to moving the family to Oklahoma during the era of the Cherokee Strip land rushes. Irena obtained a parcel of land in her own name during this period. Austin and Irena were Quaker missionaries in Oklahoma, and Austin was usually addressed as Reverend. Their last assignment was at Big Jim's Mission near Norman, Oklahoma where they supported the Big Jim band of Absentee Shawnee Indians. In spite of raising their children in the Quaker church, no records have been found to suggest that any of the children followed their parents faith as adults.1
