Death*26 August 1928 Gladys Mabie died on 26 August 1928 at Warsaw, Indiana.2
Anecdote*31 August 1928 Additional information received in Warsaw today on the Mabie tragedy in which Glayds Mabie, daughter of Eli Mabie, was burned to death early Thursday morning when the Mabie home, three miles southeast of North Webster, was struck by lighting, is to the effect that the brother Gerald was stunned by the bolt and was only aroused by his sister prior to being overcome by smoke. Gerald Mabie's condition is much improved today. He was able to be removed from the Crissy Home Hospital in Pierceton to the home of his aunt, Mrs. Edward Grieder, near North Webster, Thursday morning. Although he did not feel so well Thursday evening it is believed that his condition is rapidly improving. The two fled down the stairway to the lower floor. Gerald kicked open the stair-door with difficulty, and found himself confronted with dense smoke and flames. Believing that all chance of escape either at the front or rear door was cut off, Gerald kicked out a window at the foot of the stairway, and crawled outside the house to safety. Turning back to seize and rescue his sister, he found she had left. It is presumed that the girl, becoming panic-stricken, endeavored to escape through the kitchen of the home, and that she was quickly overcome on reaching the kitchen. The stairway led from the second floor to the pantry next to the kitchen. The father, Eli Mabie, and one son, Lavon, were sleeping on the lower floor in a room just off the living room. Gerald and Gladys were asleep in upstairs rooms. The lighting bolt struck the kitchen chimney, traveling downward through it and into the interior of the kitchen. In an instant the interior was in flames, which spread t all portions of the house. There were three rooms downstairs and two above. Mr. Mabie and his son Lavon fled out the front door in their nightclothes, shouting alarms to the two sleeping upstairs. The father and two sons reached the outside at about the same time. When they missed Gladys, Mr. Mabie and Newton Miller, a neighbor, who had reached the scene, climbed a ladder leading into Gladys' upstairs sleeping room, but they did not find her there. A few minutes later Mr. Mabie and Mr. Miller looked into the kitchen. There they saw the inert form of the girl, surrounded by flames which prevented any chance of rescue.3
Burial* She was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Tippecanoe Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana.4
