Marriage*20 December 1949 He married Betty Jean Grice, daughter of Charles Kinsey Grice and Bernice Wilkerson, on 20 December 1949.1
Death*5 April 1999 John Randolph Bibb died on 5 April 1999 at Nashville, Tennessee, at age 72.1
oObit*5 April 1999  On 5 April 1999 at The Nashville Tennessean, Nashville, Tennessee, the obituary of John Randolph Bibb read: John Bibb, retired sports editor of The Tennessean and an enduring, endearing figure in sports journalism, died last night at St. Thomas Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 72. Mr. Bibb, a graduate of Cohn High School and Vanderbilt University, received numerous national writing awards. He was twice president of the Golf Writers Association of America and a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame."
Fred Sutherland, editor of The Tennessean and golf partner of Bibb said: "John loved sports as much as any person I know, but he remained the consummate journalism professional. He felt he could preserve the integrity of sports by reporting and writing with integrity. Sports and journalism are both better because John brought his own integrity to bear, whether he was playing or writing."
John Seigenthaler, chairman emeritus of The Tennessean, with whom Mr. Bibb worked during parts of six decades, said: "Sports writers, athletes and coaches from all over the nation, will remember John as a great sports editor and writer. He was that, of course--but more than anything else he was a great human being: a great husband and father, a great mentor and to me a great friend".
Mr. Bibb was one of the first sports writers in the South to cross over into the arena of radio. For years, he was a fixture on first the Waking Crew program with Dave Overton on WSM radion and later joined Teddy Bart on the Roundtable program.
His association on both radio shows began as a commentator on sporting events and sports personalities but grew to include his views on news events, politics and other assorted topics.
Fred Russell, longtime sports editor of the Nashville Banner, remembered Mr. Bibb as a competitor and a friend. "John Bibb was always a true gentleman, but a tough competitor in the newspaper business." Russell said, " he was always fair and I considered him one of my best friends."2
