Bates with a brief sketch of his business career. His death occurred Monday evening last of pneumonia following a severe cold and pleurisy. The Sun say his condition was serious from the first, and his advanced age was somewhat against his recovery. He was conscious to within two hours of his death.. A sketch of his lifej follows: H« was born at Sharon, Ct. Feb. 3 , 1827. At about the age of six years he moved with his parents to Yates county, New York, and at the age of 16 he entered a mercantile house in the town of Geneva, New York, where he remained until August, 1858, when he came to Williamsport and engaged in the grocery and feed business. From 1858 to 1886 he was in business at the same stand, 48 East Third Street, where his son, Edward M. Bates is now his successor. At that time he retired to private life. Mr. Bates never entered public or political life, he was not a lodge man, but for forty years was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, and was a constant attendant at services. In September, 1857, Mr. Bakes was married to Isabella Mabie, sister of the late A. K. Mabie, the ceremony being performed at the house of John B. Hall, now the home of the Y. W.C. A. To this union there was born three sons and one daughter, all of whom are living — Charles. H. Bates, Edward M. Bates, William M Bates and Mrs. Thos. B. Strauser, all of this city. Mrs. Bates preceded her husband to the grave, passing away June 18th last. Besides his children Mr. Bates leaves one brother and two sisters — Solomon P. Bates of Benton, N. oObit | The obituary of Wilmot Maybee read: It was Tuesday, the 26th day of August, 1862, exactly nine days following the Acton massacre, that a party of 11 men left Forest City to recover their household goods, livestock, and provisions which they abandoned at the time of the Acton massacre. These men were Moody Caswell, N.C. Caswell, R.D.C. Cressey, Philip Deck, David Hoar, Linus Howe, Wilmot Mabee, James Nelson, Joseph Page, Thomas Ryckman and Chauncey Wilson. The men prepared their noon-day meal at the home of Carlos Caswell, where they left the oxen and proceeded to the home of James Nelson and Silas Caswell, where they loaded their wagon with household goods and provisions. The party separated at this time. Chauncey Wilson was driving the cattle behind the Wilmot Mabee wagon, and Thomas Ryckman was riding but later left the wagon to assist Wilson in driving the cattle, thereby saving his life. When the Mabee wagon drove into the Carlos Caswell yard, they were met with a volley of gun fire by the Indians who lay in ambush. None of the men was hit. Deck, Page, and Howe jumped from the wagon and fled toward the woods but were overtaken and killed. Wilmot Mabee, the driver, attempted escape by trying to drive his team through a pair of bars in the fenced enclosure. The team ran into a marsh and could go no farther. Mabee jumped from the wagon and fled toward the river but was shot in the back and killed. Ryckman and Wilson witnessed the tragedy but were unable to render assistance because their guns were left in the wagon. They were followed by the Indians as they fled toward the woods, which they reached in safety and the Indians abandoned the chase. They proceeded to Clearwater, which they reached safely. The other members of the party reached Forest City in safety. The following day a detail of men under Lt. Atkinson Visited the scene of the massacre and the bodies of Page, Deck and Howe were interred in the Manannah Cemetery (50 rods distant from the scene of the tragedy). Page was the only victim scalped. He was absolutely bald. Mabee's body was not recovered until the following spring. His parents refused to believe he had been killed. They said he was too capable to become the victim of Indians. Wilmot Mabee frequently asserted he could drive all the Indians out of Union Grove and Manannah with a pitch fork.8 | |
Burial* | He was buried at Manannah Union Cemetery, Union Grove Township, Meeker County, Minnesota. Inscription "Willmot, son of: Charles & Harriet Maybee died ug. 26, 1862; Age: 27 Yrs 13 Das; at Manannah Massacre."9,10 |

Anecdote | 1858 | In her diary, Emily describes her first meeting with James Maybee, whom she was to marry. Emily and her friend, Avice Bowbeer, attended the Congregationalist church in Chichester England, having just moved there from London to work in a milliner's shop. In 1858 she wrote in her diary, "we took sittings which were next to the front square pew and, of course, the family who occupied it naturally attracted our attention and we soon learned to know something of them. They seemed to be a large family and on holidays the number was considerably increased. I will try to name them as they took their places in the pew. They all wore mourning garb for the son of the elderly lady who wore a crepe bonnet and veil, and whose name was Edward Maybee. He had died in November 1857 from inflammation of the bowels caused by wrongly treated diarrhoea. Mrs. Maybee took the corner farthest from the pew door, then Mrs. Small, next her daughter Caroline, Maria Cheesman, Louisa Cheesman, these with the fair, tall Kate Maybee, were the regular attendants. At other times, Mr. Maybee, sons Harry and James Maybee and Joseph Watson, their friend and engaged to Carry Small, and Martha (Pattie) Maybee made the pew quite full.@.4 |
