Anecdote* | 11 June 2005 | Phyllis Maybee, wife of the late Gareth Edward Maybee, celebrated her 100th birthday on June 11th, 2005 surrounded by family and friends. All Phyllis descendants, 3 children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren and their spouses and 19 great grandchildren were in attendance at a reception and dinner party at the Holiday Inn in Burlington. Phyllis married Garry in 1927. They started married life in her family's home in Port Credit, when her father was transferred to Winnipeg. The home was within walking distance to the commuter train to Toronto where Garry worked, but the roads in the area were little more than ruts in the mud. During the depression, Phyllis had many wanderers come to her door for food in exchange for some work around the place. Word must have spread that food was available at her home in the woods. She never turned one away, but did admit to having secreted a carving knife in her apron when she suddenly realized that the man eating lunch in her dining room might cause her harm. Phyllis and Garry traveled the world together and had many happy years as parents and grandparents. She continues to live in the home in Port Credit which they purchased in 1944.4 |

Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late Gareth Edward Maybee (1996) and dear mother of Jane Stock and her husband Ted, Nancy Archer and Clair (Randy), Lynn Watson and Keith. Loving Grandma to Michael Stock (Susan), Peter Stock (Carolina), Stephen Stock (Susan), Susan Vaclavek (David), Chris Archer (Shelley), Vicki Davoren (Kirk, d. 2004), Lea Hartley (Scott), David Watson (Sarah), Keli Watson (Brett Seiler), and Brandon Watson (Jill). Phyllis was a loving great grandma to Shayna, Tamara, Sharleen, Hayley, Kiel, Aleatha, Gary, Marlo, Michelle, Keli, Andrew, Cory, Bryan, Jamie, Sarah, Emily, Colin, Isobel, Shannon, Elliott, Kingsley and Jasper. A lifelong resident of Port Credit, (Ontario, Canada) Phyllis enjoyed volunteering at the former South Peel Hospital, in the early years repairing hospital gowns and, later, working in the gift shop. She also knitted hundreds of layette sets for newborn babies to be sold at the hospital gift shop. Phyllis played an excellent game of bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs, one of them for over 50 years. Most of all, Phyllis was the "glue" that held her family together through good times and bad. Thank you to Sandra and Eva for helping make Phyllis' final years more comfortable. Thanks also to the staff on the Fourth Floor of Chelsey Park for their care in the past few months. Donations in memory of Phyllis may be made to the Trillium Health Centre Foundation, 100 Queensway West, Mississauga, ON L5B 1B8, www.trilliumhealthcentre.org/foundation or a charity of your choice.
