Arent Claase Van Petten

M, #19882, b. circa 1678, d. before 1750
Anecdote Pearson has Arent as the eldest child of our Van Patten Progenitor Couple. However, there were two older sisters that Professor Pearson did not include in JPS, 231. Ms Cynthia Brott Biasca's 'Bradt Book' (1990) she assigns Arent the 'BB' ID#213 which means that he was the third son of Aeffie (BB#21), daughter of Arent Bradt (#2). Pearson does inform us that Arent, on 3 November 1714, 'in company with Myndert Schuyler and Jan Dellamont, he received a patent for 500 acres of land on the Normanskil.' Actually, on a map made later, Arent's name appears as living there, or just south of Schenectady, toward the Hudson. Arent was doubtlessly a farmer, probably assisted by his young sons, including my ancestor #224 (BB#213A or 10th child!) who would have been but fifteen in 1714. Arent is perhaps best known, for being one of the master carpenters who built Fort Hunter for Queen Anne, quoting from the contract: 'in her Majesties Province of New York in America this Eleventh day of October, in the Tenth Year of ye Reign of Our Sovereign Lady Anne over Brittain France and Ireland Queen defender of the faith &c and in ye Years of our Lord...' 1711. Fort Hunter was to be a token to the Mohawks, and for them Queen Annes Chapel was constructed in the center of 'the ffort of twenty four foot square one Storye Ten foot high with Seller of fifteen foot square under it covered with Loggs and then Earth...' (The contract is an interesting early colonial document, included in an appendix here.) The builders had their work cut out for them, as Queen Anne's Captain General and Provincial Governor, Robert Hunter, stipulated that one (of the eventual four) block house be constructed immediately, no small feat: 'Corner Block house twenty four foot Square, Two Storyes high, Duble Loopholes, the Rofe to be covered with Boards and then shingled, the undermost part or Ground room to be nine foot high...Bedsteads and Benches In Each Blockhouse for twenty men in each and...a Chemney towards ye inside of ye said ffort with Scaffolds five foot wide along each...' wall. And all the remainder to be completed by July of 1712! Remuneration was 'one thousand pounds, Current Money of New York Province,' &c.1
Birth*circa 1678 Arent Claase Van Petten was born circa 1678 at Rensselaerswyck, Albany County, New York.2,1
Occupation*circa 1690 He was a Carpenter circa 1690.1
Marriage*10 April 1703 He married Jannetje Philipse Conyn on 10 April 1703 at Albany, New York.2,1
