oObit* | The obituary of George Gibbon Mabee read: Eulogy given by George Mabee's niece Joan Parker: Life of George Gibbon Mabee Ecclesiastes Chapter 3: To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven. A time to be born, a time to die; I chose this text from Ecclesiastes, for that whole Chapter spoke to me as a place to begin to celebrate the life of George Gibbon Mabee. We, who are gathered here today all have memories of this man and I just want to explore some of my memories and turn this from a time of grieving to a time of Celebration for his life. A Time to Be Born George Gibbon Mabee was the third child of Horace Charles Mabee and Margaret Gibbon born in 1912 in Detroit, Michigan where his father Horace was working at the time. It was just before the First Great War and they soon decided to return to Canada. The records show that George was baptized November 29, 1913 at St. Matthews Church in Ottawa. His name bespeaks their strong ancestral history. George: named after his father's father, all strong United Empire Loyalists. Gibbon: named after his Mother's maiden name: strong dour Scottish background Mabee: This name represents the French Huguenot background with it's rich history. Many tales of this ancestry were told to me and my sisters by my Grandparents, his parents. I am sure, as he was raised, it was stressed to him as well, how important it was to be a United Empire Loyalist Descendant. Pat and George will always remember the summers they spent at Turkey Point when a Cabin was being built on the Ancestral land by Dr. Grant Mabee the older brother. Uncle George's parents were older when he came along and his Mother was not well so it was the responsibility of his 12 year old sister, my mother Marjorie, to help care for him. When they returned to Ottawa his father was employed by the Bureau of Mines. No doubt George's exposure to this area led him to become involved in the mining industry himself. One of my earliest memories of this handsome Uncle was on his Wedding Day. I remember it well as I sat in the balcony of St. Matthews Church and watched when his beautiful Bride came down the aisle to meet him. My younger sister, Pat, was even more privileged as she was the flower girl and got to attend the reception. Next memory takes us to the second war when he was stationed on the East Coast and my Mother helped Aunt Margaret drive to join him, taking George Jr. and Pat. They lived there ‘till the end of the war. Following the war they moved to Northern Quebec where he carried on in the Mining profession. Next memory was right here in this Chapel when his father Horace died and he came back for the Funeral. It was my 18th birthday and I was living then with my grandparents, Horace and Margaret. It was my first death and he was so understanding and comforting even in his own grief. Only problem he asked me to iron his dress shirt, something I had never done before but he soon showed me. Not long after he invited me to visit him in Malartic where he was living with his family, I'm sure Pat and George remember my visit. I always remember how he made me feel so grown up when he took me to a Dance at a Hotel in Val D'Or. I have great memories of visiting he and Aunt Margaret in Ireland in 1974 when he gave Wes and I the grand tour of the island he loved so much and where they were so happy. My son Geoff visited them there the next year and a bond formed between them which lasted through the years. It helped that Geoff married an Irish lass. We were talking to Geoff and he mourns the loss of a kindred Irish spirit and wanted me to express his sincere sympathy. He was so pleased that he had the opportunity to visit him in the retirement Home in September when he was in good spirits. He said he had mailed him a card, promising to see him in February when he was back from Ireland for a ski holiday. How about the time the 3 – Mom, Uncle Grant and George were together for Dianne and Serge's wedding, we have a great picture of the 2 brothers and sister together. Or remember that great party Pat and Yvon had for them for their 50th Anniversary at the Officer's Mess in Trenton. I talked to his cousin Clara Bingleman who is 102 and she remembers him when he first moved to Ottawa and he was a little 5 year old running around. She was so happy that in their later years a mutual friendship developed. It started when Aunt Margaret was alive when they used to come to spend time at her cottage and continued ‘till the end. We all know the great pleasure he derived from his visits to Marshall's Bay. She mourns the loss of a friend who could share their early roots. You all have memories as I have and it is the happy memories we should all recall today as we celebrate his life. The last few years have not been easy. After his beloved Margaret died his zest for life was gone. Thanks to the devoted care of his daughter Pat and her supportive husband Yvon he hung on. HE finally decided it was time to go join Margaret. He died peacefully and with dignity in a place where he had become loved by people who succumbed to the Mabee Charm. We say Goodby as he now has joined all those who have gone before!2 | |
