Anecdote* | David Obuchowski writes: Harold Mabey is my grandfather. Not by blood, but he married my grandmother (and became my father's stepdad) long before I ever came around. And as he was one of the most loving, funniest, and sweetest guys, I never (and still never) think of him as anything other than my grandpa. He married my grandmother, Susan Fossacreta. That would have been sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s. His name was Harold. But his nickname was Buddy. Everyone knew him as Buddy. My dad called him Buddy, and so did my grandma. Where my grandma was a very short woman, Buddy was tall. And I can still remember that he had this great head of silver hair, which was always perfectly combed into a bit of a pompadour. He was always smiling, and always cracking jokes. He had a bit of a "catchphrase," which was "Boy, you better believe it!" He and my grandmother were always so in love. As you'll note from the Maybee Society pages, he died very shortly after Susan did (only 8 months). And it was clear from all of us that it was, really, of a broken heart. For one thing, my grandma smoked a lot. He didn't. And then after she died, he took up smoking. Months later, he had cancer. I remember visiting him at his home before he was sick, but after my grandma died, and he was inconsolable. But then I remember visiting him at the hospital after he was sick, and he was delighted. We took him Thanksgiving dinner there, and I remember him smiling like he used to, and joking around. My dad tried comforting him, telling him he'd be okay, and Buddy said, "No I won't, and that's ok---I get to see your mother soon!" And then he cracked some jokes about getting to be around all the pretty nurses. He was a good man, and as my father recalls, was excellent when it came to mechanical and automotive things. When he died, I was 16 years old. Now, I'm 38, and a professional writer. One of the things I write about are cars, and the connections people have with them. I wish he could read them, and hope he'd have been proud to know that I'm carrying on his love of cars.3 |
