oObit | The obituary of Larry George Mabee read: Funeral services for Larry George Mabee, 10 year old son of Mr and Mrs George Mabee (Lorraine Armstrong) of Reforestry Station were conducted Wednesday afternoon from Johnson Bros. Fureral Home. Rev J. S. Lowden of St Williams Baptist Church conducted the service and pallbearers were David Heald, Gerald Haydt, Bruce Carl, Norman Carl, and James Carl. School friends were floral bearers, Interment was in the Silver Hill Cemetery. There were six Gideon Bibles, four cancer donations, and many beautiful floral tributes. Among the tributed were those from the Staff and Pupils of Charlotteville. Larry who would have celebrated his 11th birthday in October, wa a pupil of Charlotteville Area School and attended St Williams Baptist Sunday School. His tragic death occurred Sunday on the farm of his uncle, John Mabee, RR1, Staffordville, when the tractor on which he was riding, rolled on him. He is survived by his parents, four younger brothers and sisters, and his grandparents, Mr and Mrs James Mabee and Walter Armstrong.4 | |

Anecdote* | 29 August 2011 | A 92-year-old Soldiers Grove woman died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwys. 14/61 and Hwy. 27 south of Viroqua, Sunday [August 28, 2011], at 3 p.m. Alma Maybee, 92, was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by her husband, Garrel Maybee, 91, which was traveling east on Hwy. 27. "They went right through the stop sign and into the path of a van," Vernon County Sheriff John Spears said. The Maybe vehicle struck a southbound van driven by Jack Bartelt, 65, of Gays Mills. Spears said both Garrel and Alma Maybee were taken to hospitals in La Crosse. The Vernon County Sheriff's Department on Monday morning announced that Alma Maybee died of her injuries. Garrel Maybee was listed in fair condition by Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, Monday. Bartelt and his passenger, Vickie Bartelt, were transported to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua by Tri-State Ambulance. Spears said they had non-life-threatening injuries. Assisting at the scene was the Viroqua Fire Department. The accident is under investigation.8 |

She was born July 8, 1919, to Otto and Elsie McDaniel of Soldiers Grove. Alma was one of seven children. Alma married Garrel Maybee at the Little Brown Church, July 3, 1938, in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Sebulah, Ill., where Garrel worked cutting timber, while Alma took in boarders. One year later, they moved to North Clayton ridge where they began farming. It was there that they purchased their first farm of 40 acres. Both worked the land as they started their family. Alma and Garrel were eventually parents to three children, Mary, Joyce and Jack. As this young family grew, they soon made their home on Trout Creek, where they purchased a 250 acre farm in the valley. It's there that Alma and Garrel have spent the last 70 years together. As a wife and mother, Alma worked in the tobacco warehouse and at the local apple orchards during seasonal times of the year. She was a wondeful homemaker to her family. She loved to cook and bake. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, collecting thimbles and raising chickens on the farm. She made the best home-made noodles. She was noted for those and contributed many of her home-made noodles to local church suppers for years. Her family loved to go to grandma's house for home-made chicken and noodles. Alma and Garrel had three children, Mary (Richard, deceased) Campbell of Soldiers Grove, Joyce Banta (deceased) and Jack Maybee of Blue Springs, Mo. oObit* | 9 December 2004 | On 9 December 2004 the obituary of Myra Imogene Whitaker read: Myra I. Maybee, 65, of Eads, former surgery director for the Regional Medical Center at Memphis and supervisor of surgery for Memphis Veterans Medical Center, died Tuesday at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Bethany Christian Church Cemetery in Eads. She was a graduate of Baptist School of Nursing and Union University and a member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses and Kirby Woods Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Maybee, the wife of Lowell Phillip Maybee for 42 years, also leaves a son, Andrew Maybee of Collierville; her mother, Opal Whitaker of Cordova; two brothers, Cecil Whitaker of Hollywood, Fla., and Larry Whitaker of Clinton, Miss., and two grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Baptist Trinity Hospice Center for Good Grief or West Clinic Wings.5 |
