oObit* | 11 August 1887 | On 11 August 1887 at Tonawanda, New York, the obituary of Nicholas Maybee read: Capt. Nicholas Maybee was accidently drowned off his boat early Saturday morning in the canal near the feed store of the Globe mills. It seems that in company with another party the unfortunate man had been running a canal boat between here and Buffalo during the season, carrying sawdust. As his craft was none of the best, and having been struck by a passing boat the evening previous it sprang a leak, and began shipping water. He left home between 2 and 3 o'clock a.m. to pump out his boat, and had been busily engaged in that operation for some time, for his hat and coat were found on deck near the pump. As he did not show up at a reasonable time after breakfast and business hours, suspicions were aroused that something was wrong, for he was an industrious, sober man, and regular in his habits. The channel was dragged, and the body finally recovered Sunday. Coroner Miller was notified, and the jury brought in a verdict of accidental drowning as no one knew anything of the circumstances. A wife and two children are left to mourn the loss of a good father and supporter, and they have the heartfelt sympathies of the entire community. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the M.E. Church, Rev. L.A. Stevens officiating.11 |
