He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Oakley the second of eight children of Daniel Leonard and LaVernie Fewkes Mabey. He lived most of his life in Oakley, graduating from Oakley High School in 1939. He filled a two year mission for the LDS Church in the Western States Mission from 1941 to 1943. He married Velma Jean Christensen on April 12, 1952. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 24, 1964. Derald farmed with his father and brothers until the fall of 1957, when he injured his back. In May of 1960 he started working at Burley Truck and Tractor as a mechanic until 1976, when he has badly burned and lost the use of his left hand and arm. Following extensive hospitalization and therapy, he recovered some use of his left hand and arm. In March 1979, he began work as a custodian at Mt. View Elementary School in Burley. He retired in March of 1989. Derald was active in the LDS Church, serving as first counselor of the Cassia Stak MIA, and in the Sunday Shool superintendancy, twice in Marion and also for the Oakley ward. He served in the Burley 9th Ward Sunday School Presidency, the as Sunday School president. He fulfilled a two year stake mission and had been teacher/leader of the seventies quorum, was secretary of the seventies, and was the Burley 9th ward camp director in 1979. Derald enjoyed sports and was a certified volleyball official, and helped his wife with the church sports. After his retirement, he continued to enjoy sports by accompanying his wife. Navy and received an Honorable Medical Discharge. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western States Mission, where he met Barbara Jean Petty. They were married on June 10, 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, and he especially enjoyed working with the youth. He was one of the original members and sang with the Oakley Men's Glee Club, was a charter member of the Oakley Vigilantes, and was President of the Oakley Valley Cattleman's Association. Don was a farmer and rancher all of his life. He loved to raise quality horses and cattle. He enjoyed riding horses and gathering cattle with the Wild Rose Bunch and the Oakley Valley Association. Don enjoyed spending time in the mountains, square dancing, and spending time with his family.Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Oakley; a son and daughter-in-law, Laroy (Donna) Mabey of Oakley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie (Dave) Mayne of Gypsum, Colorado, and Charie (Ron) Hulse of Idaho Falls; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Mabey of Pocatello; four brothers, Paul Mabey, Charles Mabey, Robert Mabey, and Kent Mabey; two sisters, Roxey White and Norma Rees; eighteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Oakley the second of eight children of Daniel Leonard and LaVernie Fewkes Mabey. He lived most of his life in Oakley, graduating from Oakley High School in 1939. He filled a two year mission for the LDS Church in the Western States Mission from 1941 to 1943. He married Velma Jean Christensen on April 12, 1952. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 24, 1964. Derald farmed with his father and brothers until the fall of 1957, when he injured his back. In May of 1960 he started working at Burley Truck and Tractor as a mechanic until 1976, when he has badly burned and lost the use of his left hand and arm. Following extensive hospitalization and therapy, he recovered some use of his left hand and arm. In March 1979, he began work as a custodian at Mt. View Elementary School in Burley. He retired in March of 1989. Derald was active in the LDS Church, serving as first counselor of the Cassia Stak MIA, and in the Sunday Shool superintendancy, twice in Marion and also for the Oakley ward. He served in the Burley 9th Ward Sunday School Presidency, the as Sunday School president. He fulfilled a two year stake mission and had been teacher/leader of the seventies quorum, was secretary of the seventies, and was the Burley 9th ward camp director in 1979. Derald enjoyed sports and was a certified volleyball official, and helped his wife with the church sports. After his retirement, he continued to enjoy sports by accompanying his wife. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, and he especially enjoyed working with the youth. He was one of the original members and sang with the Oakley Men's Glee Club, was a charter member of the Oakley Vigilantes, and was President of the Oakley Valley Cattleman's Association. Don was a farmer and rancher all of his life. He loved to raise quality horses and cattle. He enjoyed riding horses and gathering cattle with the Wild Rose Bunch and the Oakley Valley Association. He had 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many step children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; grandson, Paul D. (Witness) oObit | Ernest Richard Mabie was mentioned in the obituary of Morris Eldon Mabie at Warsaw, Indiana; Morris E. Mabie, 38, of 58844 Mason St., Mishawaka, was found dead in his parked auto at 3 p.m. Monday just northeast of Ireland and Ironwood Roads. Deputy Coroner Dr. Harry A. Ludwick ruled the death a suicide and said it was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. He also estimated the body had been in the auto for at least two days. Sheriff's deputies said that a hose had been run from the auto's exhaust pipe through a window and into the vehicle. The victim had previously been reported as missing by his family. Born in North Webster Mabie, an accountant, was born Dec 13, 1922, in North Webster. He had lived in this area most of his life. He was married June 30, 1943, in South Bend, to Thelma Nutting, who survives. A June 1953 graduate of Indiana University, he was an Army veteran of world War II and the Korean War, serving during the latter conflict as a Captain in the Finance Corps. Survived by Family Also surviving are his father, Walter K. Mabie, Kokomo, his mother, Mrs. Mary VanCamp, Phoenix, Ariz; two brothers, Ernest Mabie, Mishawaka, and Eugene Mabie, Bedford; five half-brothers, Charles, Ronald, Roland, Joseph, and William VanCamp, all of Phoenix, and four half-sisters, Mrs. Bernice VanCamp, and Mrs. Bernita Barker, both of Phoenix, and Mrs. Ester Furguson and Mrs. Freda Lewis, both of Kokomo. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Orvis Funeral Home. Services will be held there at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Rev. William Neece, pastor of the First Church of God, Mishawaka, will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.8 | |

He was born on Aug 20, 1924 in Mishawaka. He married Shirley Pontius on Sept. 4, 1985. She survives with four daughters, Gloria Spice and Susan Nice, both of Mishawaka, Joyce Overholt, Burr Oak, Mich., and Janice, Cathedral City, Calif; a son, Bill Minor, South Bend; his mother, Mary Ann VanCamp, Mesa, Ariz; two sisters, Bernita Barker, Justin, Texas, and Bernice VanCamp, Mesa; four brothers, Charles VanCamp, Mishawaka, Joseph and William VanCamp, both of Mesa, and Ronald VanCamp, Phoenix; 13 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Mr. Mabie was a supervisor at Freight Trucking and had worked for Tucker Freight Lines, south Bend, for 25 years as a supervisor.12 |
