oObit | 4 August 2008 | On 4 August 2008 at Kingston, Ulster County, New York, the obituary of Roger Wallace Mabie read: Roger Wallace Mabie of River Road, Port Ewen, a World War II veteran, former Esopus town supervisor and Ulster County legislator, and an authority on Hudson River steamboats, died Sunday at Kingston Hospital. He was 90. Mabie led a life of public service, starting with his election as town supervisor in 1957. He served as supervisor for a total of 16 years over a period spanning more than three decades, retiring from the post in 1993. A Democrat, he was the last minority leader of the former Ulster County Board of Supervisors and the first minority leader of its successor, the Ulster County Legislature. "Roger Mabie was an institution in this town," said Diane McCord, the Esopus town clerk. She said Mabie, who helped write the town's history in 1979, was a wealth of information, a "great resource" and a true gentleman. Marilyn Coffey, a former town clerk and supervisor, said the town was in dire political straits when Mabie ran for supervisor the first time. She said he pulled the town together. "He was an excellent, excellent, hard-working man," Coffey said. She said Mabie, who served as supervisor from 1958 to 1967 and again from 1988 to 1993, was personable and well-liked, and did wonders for the town. Mabie did "many kindnesses that had nothing to do with his job," Coffey added, noting that he helped raise money to rebuild the United Methodist Church in Port Ewen after a devastating fire. He and his wife also helped raise his two nephews, she said. John Coutant, the current town supervisor who served as a town councilman during Mabie's administration, said Mabie was "quite an individual." Coutant recalled one of Mabie's favorite sayings: "Let's run it up the flagpole and see who salutes it." He said Mabie was creative and resourceful, and always made sure residents and taxpayers came first. "He'll be greatly missed," Coutant said. "Roger was a true gentleman and he was always looking out for the best interest of the community at large," former Supervisor Raymond Rice said. Rice said he could not say enough good things about Mabie, whom he credits with his own involvement in local politics. The Port Ewen Water Treatment Plant was named in Mabie's honor in 1992. A lifelong resident of Port Ewen, Mabie graduated from Kingston High School in 1933 at age 16, and continued post-graduate studies there in preparation for college. At the same time, he managed the school football team and worked for the Freeman as a high school sports reporter. To help save for college, Mabie was employed as a Fuller Brush salesman and worked in local orchards and at the YMCA. He attended Syracuse University, where he served as president of his senior class and managed the football and crew teams. During his summers, he served as a crew member on the Hudson River Day Line. He graduated from Syracuse in 1940. Though he was accepted into the Harvard School of Business in 1940, he chose to enter the Naval Officer Training Program in the fall of 1941, just prior to the start of World War II. Commissioned as an ensign, he was assigned at the outbreak of the war as a captain of a sub chaser, in charge of 64 crew members, and was later assigned as captain of a patrol craft escort with a crew of 110. He saw action both in the Atlantic and Pacific, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war, he reapplied to Harvard Business School and graduated in 1949. He returned to Port Ewen, where he went to work for the Island Dock Ship Yard as general manager. There, as the shipbuilding industry changed, he developed a business plan to build fiberglass pleasure boats. Mabie went to work for Central Hudson in the 1960s, initially to promote its electric heat program. He retired in 1983 as the utility's director of community relations. A past president and member of the Ulster County Community College Board of Trustees, Mabie was actively involved in starting the college. He was also a founder and past president of both the Klyne Esopus Museum and Hudson River Maritime Museum, and was a charter member and past commander of Town of Esopus American Legion Post 1298. He was a lifelong member of the Town of Esopus United Methodist Church and had chaired its Finance Committee; was a past president and member of the Steamship Historical Society, and was an active member of the Democratic Party. He also served as a trustee for the former Kingston Savings Bank and Albany Savings Bank. He was born in Port Ewen on May 27, 1917, the son of the late Wallace and Lillian Zimmerman Mabie. On July 12, 1952, he married the former Margaret "Peggy" Scanlon in New York City. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Mabie of Vineyard Haven, Mass., and Christopher Mabie of Port Ewen; and a nephew, Dr. William S. Birkhead. A nephew, Robert Birkhead, died previously. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Town of Esopus United Methodist Church, Green and Main streets, Port Ewen.
