Peter Secord
M, #2526, b. 15 December 1725, d. 14 May 1818
Anecdote* | | Steve Mabie found Land Petitions for the following in which it is clearly stated that the individual was a son or daughter of Peter Secord Senior (with the date of the petition): Lucy Secord Goring, wife of Francis Goring, 25 May 1793 Lucretia Secord Bailey, widow, 7 May 1796 Silas Secord: Silas petitioned for land as a member of Butler's Rangers, but he also stated in one petition (24 November 1796) that he was a son of Peter Secord Senior. Also, in Margery Secord Millard's petition, Silas Secord testified that he was her brother and that their father was Peter Secord Senior. Fanny Secord Braily, wife of John Braily, 14 April 1797 Elizabeth Secord McKenzie, wife of Colin McKenzie, 20 August 1802 David Secord. In a petition filed on 6 July 1804, David Secord the Younger stated that he was the son of Peter Secord. Margery Secord Millard, wife of Dan Millard, 26 November 1804 and later Anna Secord Logan, age 34 (born circa 1794), 15 January 1829 Sarah Secord Snively, widow of George Snively, 10 July 1835 Presumably, both Anna and Sarah were born in the 1790s.Peter did not marry Rebecca Brown until 1807. It is possible that both girls were Rebecca's and that Peter adopted them.2 |
Baptism Name | | His baptism name was Pierre Sicard.3 |
Birth* | 15 December 1725 | Peter Secord was born on 15 December 1725 at New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York.4 |
Baptism | 25 December 1725 | He was baptized on 25 December 1725 at French Church, New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York; witnesses: Peter Sicard & Mde. Madeline Parcot.3 |
Marriage* | circa 1755 | He married Abigail Fowler circa 1755. |
(Witness) MilService | 1760 | Daniel, John & Peter all went to Courtlant Manor, NY and served with the Provincial Troops in 1760.5 |
MilService* | | Peter Secord was in the military, During the seven year war he enlisted in the 5th Company Upper Battalion of Westchester County Militia under Captain Annonias Rogers.1 |
MilService | between 1777 and 1780 | Peter was a loyalist in the American Revolution and served in Butlers Ranger's from 1777 to 1780. |
Residence | | He lived; After the war he settled at Niagara-on-the Lake Ontario Canada. and afterwards moved to Charlottesville Twp, Norfolk County, Ontario. |
(Witness) Immigration | between 1781 and 1782 | He immigrated with Frederick Mabee between 1781 and 1782 at Saint John City, Saint John County, New Brunswick, Canada. He was a loyalist during the American rev. after the war ended he fled to New York City and with his family took a ship to New Brunswick Canada in 17831 His cousin Peter Secord came with the Mabee party6.1,7 |
(Witness) Anecdote | 1792 | The Mabee party, it is said, started for Upper Canada in the fall of 1792, but they wintered in Quebec and did not reach Turkey Point until some time in 1793. They drove twelve cows, rode horses, and employed an Indian guide to pilot the way through the wilderness Some members of the family claim that the settlement was made as early as 1791, while others say it was not made before 1794; but Mrs. Mabee and her family were living there in a comfortable log-house at the time of Governor Simcoe's visit in 1795. The grave of Frederick Mabee was there also, and a piece of ground known as the "Indian fields" had been cleared of its light growth of timber and cropped; all of which makes it appear quite reasonable that the family may have settled there, at least as early as 1793. The Mabee party consisted of Frederick Mabee and wife; Oliver Mabee, their eldest son, aged about nineteen; Simeon, the second son, aged about seventeen; Pellum, the youngest son, aged about twelve – at least, these were the ages of the sons at the time of the Governor's visit; two single daughters – Polly and Sally; and two married daughters – Nancy and Lydia, with their respective husbands – John Stone and Peter Teeple. It is said that Peter Secord, also, came with the Mabee family.7 |
Marriage | 24 January 1807 | Peter Secord married Rebekah Brown on 24 January 1807 at Charlotteville Township, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.1 |
Death* | 14 May 1818 | Peter Secord died on 14 May 1818 at London District, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada, at age 92.1 |
oObit* | | The obituary of Peter Secord read: Last month at Talbot Road in the London district Peter Secord died who had nearly completed his 103rd yr. His longevity may in some measure be ascribed to his remarkable temperance. He was one of the first settlers and perhaps the oldest inhabitant of the province. He killed four wolves in the course of last yr and walked twenty miles to make the necessary affidavit to entitle him to the wolf scalp bounty. |

He married Magdelina Badeau, born at New Rochelle, New York c. 1739. James was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church at New Rochelle as "Jacques" on 28 Mar 1732. The witnesses were Mr. Johanes Maby and Mad. Susan his wife. Following his marriage to Magdeline Badeau, James lived at New Rochelle for a time and had two children baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church: Salomon (Solomon), born on 9 Mar 1755 and baptized on 4 Apr 1755, and Etienne (Stephen), baptized on 9 Oct 1757. In the years prior to the American Revolution, they resided at Walpack, Sussex County, New Jersey where James Secord was listed on the Tax Rateables List of 1773-74. He afterwards moved to the Susquehanna Valley, Pennsylvania. During the American Revolution, James was loyal to the British cause and he was a Lieutenant in Butler's Rangers. In the Land Petition dated 3 Aug 1795 filed by his sons, James and David Secord, it was noted that James Secord, Sr., deceased, joined His Majesty's Standard as early as the year 1777 and brought with him forty-six loyal subjects to Niagara. In the year following, he brought his family consisting of a wife and seven children, three of whom joined Col. Butler's Rangers and served during the War. James, Sr. served as a Lieutenant in the Six Nations Indian Department. He received 500 acres of land and his heirs wished his further entitlement. They were granted an additional 1,500 acres to bring his entitlement to 2,000 acres.3 In his land petition dated at Niagara on 12 Jan 1797, James Secord, Jr. noted that his father brought into this province about forty men, all of whom joined Col. Butler's Rangers. He was promised a Company in the Rangers but this was afterwards withheld from him.4 James and Magdeline Secord and their family were recorded in the 1783 Census of Niagara. They afterwards settled in Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co. James received a grant of the north half of Lot 19, Concession 2, Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co. in the Long Point Settlement.
