The autopsy report was not available this morning Mabie was born in Flint, Ind, and had been a Coldwater resident since 1941, coming from Indiana. He formerly was employed as a cook by area restaurants, and at the time of his death was employed by the Carriage Inn Convalescent Center. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Coldwater Moose Lodge, and the American Legion and VFW posts. His wife the former Ruby Howell died in 19774. Surviving are his parents, Mr and Mrs Ralph Mabie of Coldwater and sisters, Mrs Izora Combs of Coldwater and Mrs Klyta Smith of Mason.8 |

He had been seriously ill for the past several weeks. Funeral arrangements and a complete obituary will be carried in Friday's edition of The News-Sentinel. The body rests at the Moyer-Haupert Funeral Home, Akron. Final rites for Selah Maby will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Akron Methodist church with Rev. C. F. Fawns officiating. On Nov. 30, 1934 in Akron, Ind., she married Clyde Doughterty, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a volunteer of over 7,000 hours at St. Joseph Hospital. She was a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Homemakers Club, Odon, Indiana American Legion Auxiliary and Main Street United Methodist Church of Kokomo. Survivors include one son, Michael and wife, Judy Dougherty, Kokomo; four grandchildren, Scott Dougherty of Kokomo, Allison Gaillard, Kokomo, Shawn Johnson, Westfield, Shane Johnson, Kokomo; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Maby, Stoughton, Wis; and several nieces and nephews.Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. Services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel. The Rev. Harold Williams will officiate. Burial will follow in Akron Cemetery, Akron, Ind. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2004 in Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel. On the 8th February 1850, they sailed from Plymouth on the ship Fatima, Commander Ray being in charge. The number of passengers being 223, comprising of 42 married couples, 37 single men, 27 single girls and 75 children. Near the Cape of Good Hope a severe storm was encountered and it took two weeks to round the Cape. When the storm was at it's worst, the Captain ordered all passengers to be battened below. Mrs. Mabey begged to be allowe to remain on deck, saying, 'I am a Captain's wife, you know." the Captain ordered a chair to be lashed to the mast. Then having securely tied her in, covered her over and around with tarpaulins where as she said, "She rode out the storm." The journey took 4 months and they anchored in South Australia on the 10th of June 1850. Going ashore they found the hotels full and no accomodation. However for a l pound note they were granted sufficient space in which to stack their luggage. There the seven rested for the night. Next day, Thomas Lawton hired a bullock wagon and driver to take them to Adelaide. Grandma Mabey, being 70 years of age, was allowed to ride with the luggage. The rest walked beside the wagon to Gawler Place, Adelaide, where friends lived upon whose advice they had come to South Australia."1 |
