oObit* | 5 February 1984 | On 5 February 1984 at Hackensack, New Jersey, the obituary of George Harold Mabie read: George H Mabie, artist, illustrator, and cartoonist, died yesterday. He was 91. A lifelong resident of Leonia and one of its two oldest living natives, Mr Mabie could trace his family tree to the times when the Borough was called the Old English Neighborhood. His paternal ancestors, members of the Moore family, were among the 20 founding families of Leonia. His father George W Mabie, was the borough's first fire chief and police marshal. Mr Mabie studied at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in Manhattan and was a classmate of Norman Rockwell, the well known painter and illustrator. A close friend of Mabie's family, William Burke, said that both Rockwell and Mabie, who were in their teens at the time, had to lie about their ages in order to sketch and paint nudes and classical statues. After the Depression, he concentrated on cartooning, and his work appeared in several New York newspapers and many national magazines of that era, including Collier's, Liberty, and The Saturday Evening Post. He also did book illustrations for various publishing houses. His last exhibition, held at the Silverman Galleries in Alexandra, Va, in 1982, included his painting of Robert Perry's 1909 polar expedition. A veteran of World War I, he served with the Army Engineers in France. He was a charter member of the Sgt Clendenon Newell Post 1 of Leonia, named after his childhood friend and comrade in arms who was killed in the war. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Reinhart Mabie. His sister, Emma Hanson, died in December. Services will be Tuesday at the Heus Funeral Home, Fort Lee, with burial in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.13 |
