oObit*20 February 2004  On 20 February 2004 at Salt Lake City, Utah, the obituary of Amar Hickman read: Mrs. Amar Hickman Mabey Pierson, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at the Atria Assisted Living Retirement Center in St. George of causes due to age. A daughter of Della Vilate Taylor Hickman and Joseph Smith Hickman, she was born on May 22, 1914, in Logan, Utah. Her name came about because her father at the time was studying Spanish at Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State), and he chose the Spanish verb amar - "to love," for his new baby daughter. Amar lived up to her name. A bundle of energy, she had a wide smile, a twinkle in her eye and goodness in her soul. Relatives and friends were familiar with "Amar trinkets," thoughtful little gifts that only she could come up with. Though she had no children of her own, she willingly shared her heart full of motherly love, which was gratefully accepted by those who needed it. Amar graduated from Logan High School in 1932 and from Utah State in 1936, after which she taught elementary school in Clearfield. On August 23, 1939, she married Joseph L. Mabey in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She used to say that her one claim to fame was being married by David O. McKay, who later became the Prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. McKay had been a friend of Joe Mabey's mother. Joe taught Amar to hunt and shoot and enjoy sports. Unfortunately, they were unable to have children. Joe died in 1970. In 1980 Amar married Verle J. "Lefty" Pierson, a former Major League 1st Baseman for Cincinnati. They enjoyed playing golf and watching sports on television, especially Utah Jazz games. The Piersons moved from Ogden to St. George in 1990, and Lefty died in 1997. A one-time breeder of Siamese cats, Amar was endeared to her dachshund, Schatzie, who was a big part of her life in later years. She served as the first woman on the Clearfield City Council and was named Outstanding Clearfield Citizen. She was also active in the Republican Party and was second vice president of the Utah Federation of Republican Women, and she especially enjoyed attending Republican conventions during the Reagan era. She also participated in International Training and Communication (ITC), in which she held the titles of Toastmistress, Club President, Council President and Regent President. Amar is survived by two sisters, Dot Hickman Barclay (William) of Redondo Beach, CA; and Della Jo Hickman Salt (William) of Bountiful, UT; and scads of nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Blate Hickman, and two sisters, Ineda Hickman Roe, and Iola Hickman Hunter. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Utah State University in memory of Amar Hickman Mabey Pierson. USU, 1420 Old Main, Logan, Utah 84322.
