oObit* | 23 July 1918 | On 23 July 1918 at Gloversville, New York, the obituary of James Clyde Maybee read: The funeral of Private James Clyde Maybee, who was drowned in the Barge canal near Oswego. Saturday, was held yesterday. A prayer service was held at the John J. Dingnan undertaking parlor in this city at 8 o'clock, after which the remains were taken to Mayfield, where the funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member. Rev. Alex. Lennox, Litt. B., pastor of the church, officiated at both services. The boy was conveyed from this city to Mayfield in a hearse draped with American flags and the company squad and members of the Old Guard of this city followed in another automobile. Following the service at Mayfield the body was taken to West Day for interment in the family plot at that place. Full military honors were accorded the dead soldier, the usual three rounds being fired over the grave and "taps" sounded by the bugler.4 |
