Death*5 November 1959 Edmund Burke Smith died on 5 November 1959 at Los Angeles, California, at age 81.1
Anecdote* After his marriage to Ethel, Edmund farmed near Beloit KS on land owned by his father who had homesteaded the property. His father sold the farm in 1918, and Edmund and Ethel and their growing family relocated first to Neosho, MO, and shortly thereafter to Carterville, MO, to a small acreage and very modest house. Edmund's children remember him as a bookish and artistic man who had painted scenery and persons on the Beloit farm house walls, who enjoyed reading literature to his children, and who insisted his children wash up before dinner and be prepared to partake in discussions at the dinner table about events of the day, or the book they were currently reading. He selected his own middle name in recognition of the noted British parliamentary orator Edmund Burke, whose patriotic speeches he admired. Although they judged him not a skilled farmer, his children remember him as an able gardener and this talent served the family well after they moved to Carterville. During their school years in Carterville his children remember he was fond of taking them fishing on overnight outings in the nearby countryside, but they also remember he was often away from the family working on the railroad, or on farms to the west in Kansas. The family had a horse and pretty carriage in Carterville and never owned a car. Carterville was at that time a played-out mining town offering few prospects for day labor. When his children had nearly all graduated from high school, his wife Ethel moved to her brother's farm in Eldorado, KS, to care for her elderly mother and while she was in Kansas, Edmund obtained a night watchman's job in Hanford, WA. A few months after taking up his new job, he became ill with pernicious anemia and moved to live with his daughter Eugenia Beatrice and her husband Curtis Case and their family, in Temple City, CA. After the passing of her mother in Kansas, Ethel joined him there and both lived out their retirement years in a small home remodeled for them by their sons Roger and Maitland on Jean's property in Temple City. Edmund was a tall, thin man like his own father, and medicated for his anemia after he retired. His anemia may have been related to celiac disease (a genetic intolerance of dietary gluten common in people of English and Irish descent, which often results in anemia, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and excessive fatigue). His daughter Irene suffered from Crohn's Disease, a malady which appears in families with celiac disease, and two of his grandchildren are gluten intolerant.1

Alanson John Smith

M, #31847, b. circa 1813, d. 13 June 1888
Note*  I can remember my Grandfather Smith, who lived around among his children after losing his wife. I was then 5 or 6 years old before he died, but I still remember his hands as he whittled away at cigar boxes, making them into beautiful keepsakes for every grandchild. He made picture frames, trick pincers, rolling pins, and lots of other things that delighted us. Mine disappeared when our fancy creek home burned down. He was a tall thin man with arms so long he could hardly find sleeves in any of the clothes he bought that were long enough. He was a woodsman and could cut and cord lot of wood when it was needed. And those old timers knew how to take an ax and go into the fine timber that was here in the early days and cut out nearly every part of a substantial log house. They lived in comfort with a big fireplace, all the heat they needed for warmth and cooking, and I think they could turn out perfect bread and all they needed to eat by having iron utensils to cover it all from ashes and smoke. And their old copper and brass utensils are still the envy of antique collectors.1
