Funeral services will be held today at the Richards Funeral Home, Riverdale, with the Rev Bert Van Soest, pastor of the Pompton Reformed Church officiating. Interment will be in the Pompton Church Cemetery.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Gary, at home; a stepdaughter, Mrs William (Florence) Hoebee of West Milford; a brother Fred of Pompton Lakes; seven sisters, Mrs Pearl DeGroat of California, Mrs Margaret Hunt of Waldwick and Mrs Edith Hunt, Mrs Nettie Gildersleeve, Mrs Hazel Naylor, Mrs Jane Ricks, and Miss Eva Mabie, all of Pompton Lakes.1

She was first generation, having been born in 1916 to an immigrant parent, and survived the 1918-1919 pandemic, which claimed her two oldest sisters. Julia entered the workforce in the early '60s and worked as a keypunch operator until the opportunity arose and she changed her employment to driving a full-size school bus. She worked for Students Bus Transportation for 15 years, and when the family moved to Delaware, she continued her employment with Dawson Bus Company for 26 years, until her retirement at age 85.
She was a very active member of North Arlington United Methodist Church in New Jersey, Parkway Community Church in Hicksville, Woodside United Methodist Church in Delaware, and Trinity United Methodist Church in Charlotte Harbor, Fla. She organized the Ugli Quilt Group, which made quilts for the homeless; this group was inducted into the Order of St. Barnabas.
Julia leaves to cherish her memory her son, Charles (Linda) Mabie of Punta Gorda; daughter, Cathy Ann (Jay) Dilmore of Felton, Del; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Anna Placek; her husband of 41 years, Floyd; daughter, Margaret Breare; and sisters, Ludmilla Placek, Louisa Placek, Anna Hohorst and Emily Somelofski.
A celebration of Julia's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charlotte Harbor. Inurnment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Hackensack, N.J.7,8

Mr. Mabey was a member of the Mercer County Steel Quoit Church League and enjoyed vegetable gardening, billiards, woodworking, fishing and was an avid boxing fan.
Predeceased by his brother, George C. Mabey, and his son-in-law, Bill Breining, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Doris Smith Mabey; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Denise Scheidell of Hamilton Square; his daughters, Barbara McConnell of West Palm Beach, FL and Cris Breining of Mercerville; a sister, Evelyn M. Culver of Palmetto, FL; his grandchildren, Samantha Riggs, Ramon McConnell, Kyle and Dylan Breining, and Amy Scheidell; three great-grandchildren, Richard, Aleysha and Ryan Riggs; and several nieces and nephews.4
