An amazing mother, G-ma, and G-Gma, Bettie taught her children and grandchildren to appreciate all that life had to offer, including fine dining, great shopping, relaxing at the spa and spending time with family. Always one to whip up a cake and fry up a chicken for visitors; her recipes will be cherished memories. Bettie was an avid bowler, golfer, and loved to cheer on her favorite football teams. An Oklahoma fan at heart, she also cheered for the Huskers to keep her Nebraska family happy. With her daughter residing in Switzerland for 24 years, she was able to spend a great deal of time traveling to Europe and other countries. Bettie is survived by her son, Steve; three grandchildren: Erin Callahan (Rob) of Woodbury Minnesota, Steven Mabee (Sara) of Columbus and Rhiannon Crumley (Stephen) of Cleveland, Tennessee; seven great-grandchildren; and close friends, Vonda, Patti, Bonnie, her walking partner Donna and Whootsit a.k.a. Whats her bucket - Deb. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lorene; brothers, Outher and Olin; daughter, Debra Mabee Knobel; daughter-in-law, Kara Mabee.2 |

The son of Thomas Victor Mabee Sr. and Theresa Faulls, he was born on January 24, 1945. Tommy, loved his family and would do anything for anyone. You immediately knew Tommy was around with a loud "Hello", smile, and a clap of the hands. He enjoyed daily walks with his brother Edward, exercised daily, enjoyed waking up at the crack of dawn, coffee, daily phone calls to his siblings and family, his special love for the Washington Redskins, Tina's homemade Chili, Tony's cooking, and his special love he had for Mr. Tony Boffa Sr. who was like a father to him. We can still here Tommy saying, "Go Redskins!" Sarah, Sam (Emily), Ben, Charlie, Eddie, Audrey, Chess, Clark, Martha, Rachel, Heather and Ross. Martha's life was full of great times with her family friends and colleagues. She knew how to throw a party and how to run a meeting. She loved to gather people together, and planned countless gatherings with family and friends. People appreciated her upbeat nature and can-do attitude. She enjoyed volunteering, golf (mainly with John), cooking family dinners, reading and travel. She was a leader in the community as President of the Evanston Junior League, trustee of the Hadley School for the Blind, and trustee of Northwestern University. Martha was a co-founder of the first hospice in Chicago, Horizon Hospice. Her involvement lasted over 40 years. Horizon is now part of JourneyCare. Martha and John have a home in the Loblolly development in Hobe Sound Florida. Both she and John were leaders in the Loblolly Community Foundation, an organization devoted to bettering the lives of those who live in the surrounding communities. Martha is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren and her siblings Sarah Howard (Jim), Clark Grimes, Mary Olk and Kate Weingarten (Seymour), John's brother Jim Mabie (Kay) and many nieces and nephews. Martha's Memorial Service will be held Thursday, July 11, 2019, 4:00 p.m. at Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Avenue, Kenilworth, Illinois 60043.1 |
