Williamsville School, Vernon Township, Sussex County, New Jersey [8] |
- From New Jersey Herald 4/14/70. Article submitted by WJM #195, shows picture of school. (Original owned by Alfred Houghtaling.) Column called "Out Of The Past". Early in the nineteenth century this was one of 15 one room schools (?) in Vernon township, where only recently the five (unreadable) schools were discarded in favor of one 14-room school. This was the Williamsville School, situated on Vernon Road about half-way between Vernon and Stockholm. The teacher in the picture has been identified as (blank) Farber, and old school records give her tenure of (blank) as 1895 to 1897, which would indicate that this picture was taken some time during those years. When this school was built is not known, but the last student listed was a Min__Vail in 1909. In the old days, ______school had its own school board, and the names on this list were families still prominent in the area, such as ______, Williams, Storms, Strait and mabee. This particular district was bounded on the east by Canistear, the south by Hardyston Township, the west by McAfee, and the north by Vernon. Identification of the students has been made by Mrs. Maud S. F. Utter, now of Citrus Heights, Calif., who sent the picture to the Herald for publication, and asked that it later be turned over to the Sussex County Historical Society. In the front row, left to right, are two Cahill sisters, Maud Storms, Ethel Graner, Hattie Riggs, E. Birdsell, Minnie Riggs, Frank Flood, Jesse Riggs. Back Row: left to right: Etta Birdsell, Jennie Garlinghouse, William Storms, Goldie Graner, Lucy Rysdeck, Eva Tice, Bessie Mabie, Bertha Kelsey, Betty Jennings, Alfred Riggs, Stella Birdsall, Silas Storms, (with the teacher standing behind him), Bertha Webb, Kate Garllinghouse, C. Mabee, Blanche Mabee, and Maud Flood (Mrs. Utter.)
Additonal comments on Williams family and Wiliamsville from Jennie Sweetman.
Comments from the late Charles Conway: April 29, 1970. Morris Stickle also taught at Williamsville. May have been the last to teach there. School house was still standing there in 1924. Someone bought the schoolhouse, tore it down and took it to Vernon in back of Schaeffers on Route 94, Vernon. Mabee place was on Route 515, past Henry Bell's house."
