- George W. Mabee, 90, long time resident of Green Lake and since retirement in 1985, Mountain Home AR, passed away on Aug. 20, 2012, in Ames, IA, after a brief illness. He was a resident of Bethany Life Community in Story City, IA, for last few months.
He was born in Newark, N.J., son of George and Grace Mabee. Prior to retiring to Mountain Home in 1985, he was the Registrar of Ripon College. He was a member of the Green Lake School Board for many years and also Commander of the American Legion Post there also. He was a proud Navy veteran of World War II, where he was in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Anzio prior to be transferred to the Pacific Theater. He is survived by three sons, Paul of Ripon, WI; David of Penfield, N.Y.; Mark of Austin, TX; and a daughter, Joan Aiton of Ames, IA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Edna.
A memorial service will be held at St John's Episcopal Church in Ames, IA, on Saturday at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Israel Family Hospice House of Ames, IA, Bethany Life Communities of Story City, IA or the American Cancer Society .
