Auburn, New York [8] |
- Fred G. Mabey, 65, former well known Auburn business man, died Thursday afternoon at his home in Milford, Conn. Word to this effect was received here by George N. Stupp, brother of Mrs. Mabey.
Mr. Mabey was born in Fleming and moving to Auburn opened the first auto garage in this city. He was an expert machinist and one of Auburn's first auto mechanics. After operating his own garage for several years, he entered into partnership with George H. Leonard. Upon retiring from this partnership, he launched into the concession field at Island Park, foot of Owasco Lake, where he constructed the miniature railroad now in existence at that resort.
He also operated several refreshment stands at the lake, disposed of the railroad to John West, brother of Billy West, the former well known minstrel man.
Retiring from active business, Mr. Mabey purchased an estate near Milford, Conn., where he had resided for the past 20 years. He was a member of Auburn Lodge of Elks. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace B. Stupp Mabey; an aunt, Mrs. Lemuel Young of this city and by several cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mabey is the daughter of the late Frank J. Stupp, former recorder.
The body will arrive in Auburn next Tuesday morning for committal services at the family plot in Fort Hill Cemetery
