- George E. Mabee, 68, retired California school teacher and former Oregon Statesman employee, died Friday at his home, 212 21st St., Salem [Oregon]
The body was found in the garage. Death was due to carbon monoxide.
The Marion County coroner's office said the man left s letter in which he said he was suffering from an incurable disease.
Mr. Mabee came to Salem in 1952 and was employed as a proofreader at the Statesman several years.
Surviving are his widow, Sarah

- Jack Mabee, 59, one of Hollywood's more colorful restauranteurs, died early yesterday at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital after a minth's illness. He resided at 3212 DeWitt Drive.
Mr Mabee was born in Oklahoma when it was Indian Territory and spent many years as a cowboy in Montana beforming a wild west show called the Great Northern Stampede. He came to Southern California in 1921 and became an automobile dealer in Santa Ana.
Tiring of this, he opened a tavern on Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood in 1933. The place became a rendezvous for Westerners who drifted to Hollywood hoping to hog-tie a fortune. Mr Mabee grubstaked many of them.
Recently he half retired from business to run a small café in Niland. He leaves besides his widow, Cecile, two brothers, Roy of Anaheim and George of Hanford, and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be tomorrow at Pierce Bros Hollywood Mortuary. Interment will follow in Inglewood Park Cemetery.
